Summer 2012 Granny "Square" Swap (sign ups closed)

LOVE the Shepherd puppies! We have 2 - a 7 yo American female, and a 1.5 yo Czech male. Our female, Keera, is just a family pet. She is amazing. She "polices" the other dogs and gets on them if they are naughty. We nicknamed her "The Sheriff." The male, Jax, is out of awesome working lines and we hope to get some shutzhund (sp?) titles on him. Both his parents are imported, both hold titles and are better than any police K9s I have ever been around, so we are excited :) I'll see if I can get some pics to share :)

Can't beat the breed for loyalty, affection, protection or comedic relief!!

I don't have a coyote problem. At least I never have. Guess I could at a future date. Our property is fenced and I see the coyotes pass by but one has never jumped the fence. My chickens are in a run with the wire buried a foot below ground to keep predators out but it wouldn't keep a coyote out if it was determined. We have a big boy running the neighborhood. My neighbor saw him and said he's bigger than normal. I'm wondering if it could be a wolf. I haven't seen it so I can't say. I was planning on a trip tomorrow to Apple Valley but the weather is changing my mind. It's supposed to be windy and stormy and I don't want to get caught out in the desert. Fom home it's 50 plus miles to what they call 4 corners (where hwy58 and 395 cross) with nothing in between and another 40 miles from there with nothing until you get to Adelanto. It's pretty desolate and there are a few places where there is no cell phone service.

Sadie and I will just have to wait until next week. I want to get some quilting done and I'm still cleaning house after five dogs have gone. She will chase the ball now and bring it back to me so we have fun doing that but she still won't go out on the property alone, just out the back to go potty.
Great that the coyotes have stayed out of the yard! We have the chickens fenced in but the rest of the property is not fenced yet. That will change soon. I can't get the calves until we get the fence up.

Sounds like a smart move to wait until these storms have passed. We live right off 395 too (at the north end of course) and these storms have really wreaked havoc around here. The erosion caused by the torrential rains we got will take quite a while to repair. The next front is due in any time now and I'm wondering how bad this next one will be.

No swaps for me til after the holidays. I thought I was busy before these last storms hit. The amount of damage to our property is scary. Our peafowl coop actually flipped all the way over, broke open and the peacocks all escaped except for one which was killed.

I've been so upset all day. We've also sustained a ton of damage due to erosion. I'm not even sure how to go about fixing it all but we will get to it all eventually. The winds were horrible and the driveway and front yard have washed away in several places. They keep saying how lucky we are that the weather was unseasonably warm or we would be dealing with 6 feet of snow but I think I'd rather be dealing with snow at this point.

Edited to add DH makes these coops for me (with some help now and then) and they are built like houses (and not mobile homes either). He uses screws to attach all siding and uses 2x4 framing. The floor joists are 2x6s. Our coops have withstood 75 mile per hour winds before and we don't live on any mountain crests. These wind gusts were close to 100 mph! Crazy for this close to the valley areas. We will be attaching guy lines to all the coops once the damage has been repaired. Even so we are lucky. Many of our neighbors had parts of their roofs blown off and the low areas of Reno are expecting terrible flooding this evening.

I didn't know there were storms in your area. I've been to AL for the last month and while they have cable I didn't see anything on the news. Though to be honest they don't watch the news much there. I'm old I do and it's a long story but I had a hard time getting to use the TV. Unless I stayed up late.

So have you got pics and is there anything anyone here can do to help?

I'll get pics tomorrow. This storm hit a huge chunk of the west. I just caught the news and it looks like temps are plummeting which is actually good news! The terrible flooding they expected will be avoided since the rain is turning to snow. I am sure there are many agencies, like the red cross, that would accept help but we will be ok here. Thank you so much for the offer! I heard that winds got up to 150mph on the Mammoth mountain peaks! Wow what a storm. I know that for those folks who have experienced serious tornadoes this probably seems calm but, although we get a lot more wind here than we were used to in the Bay Area, we don't normally deal with winds quite this strong. lol I used to think a wind strong enough to pick up a garbage can was serious.

Sunny-I'm sorry about all the damage and, especially, your birds. You are all in my heart and mind. We've had 7 inches of rain so far this week with another 3 days of rain and snow forecast, but other than loss of power due to trees on lines, we've been ok. Please take care.

Good to hear you are doing OK. I've been worried about all our friends on the coast. I keep hearing about all of the areas that have flooded.

Down here we have only had wind. The storms have tracked north and south of us. Today was the worst. We had regular dust storms when the gusts got over 55 mph. The sand sure burns the eyes. Sadie had a blast though and got a lot of exercise chasinf leaves. She was hilarious. I'm in the middle of cleaning house after all my company is gone and I want to decorate for Christmas. I know I'll have to redust the rooms I just finished.

Sorry to hear the winds were that bad up your way Sunny. Hope things get back to normal soon. We could sure do with some rain and snow down this way.

OMG!!! I had no idea of the storms in your area. I am so sorry!!! I haven't been online or had time to watch the news. Thinking of you! ((((HUGS))) We've just been so busy trying to get the new business going. Today was my first Sun off from work in about 7 weeks. I'm so glad DH decided for us to close on Sun b/c I think I would have just been too tired to do it today. Hang in there!
