Summer 2012 Granny "Square" Swap (sign ups closed)

they are adorable. I didn't have any setting hens and didn't have time to incubate this year so I didn't have any babies. My hens are not laying well but my friend that has her hens on my property isn't getting any eggs at all.
Thanks Betty. Mine aren't laying well either. I'm still searching for the elusive super dark egg layer. Out of all my marans hens I only have 1 really dark layer. It's time for new blood. These eggs came from debs-flock. I plan on getting more hatching eggs soon.
I'd have to get rid of the chicken to get a dog and DW says no. I envy her and you.

Sunny - you too. I can't wait to hatch, but have to wait til company leaves. The kids will be sleeping in the office where I set up my incubator.
LOL I have the same problem. I didn't know, when the gal offered to bring these eggs to the Reno Poultry Show (months ago), that the kids were coming for Christmas. They usually wait til we can come see them. The brooder is in the guest room now so the chicks will have to camp out in our bathroom while they're here. It's gonna be interesting.

I like the office cuz it's easier to control the room temp, which is more important than I realized. My Gen 1588 does well but each section of the bator does not stay the same.

Unlike a hen I can't rotate the eggs to the warmest part of the incubator. This I believe is why some eggs hatch later than others even though they were all started at the same time. There may be a variance of a degree or more in different sections of the incubator.

I like to run mine about 101. I keep the room at 80* at least if I can. It still fluctuates though.

If you're getting hot spots you might want to add another fan. I used to have that problem in my old incubator and a fan took care of it. I also took a couple of blankets and draped them over the bator, that kept the room temp fluctuations from affecting the bator as much. The new bator isn't as touchy as my old one was so I can keep the room at whatever temp I like during incubation. Now that the chicks are brooding the room is at 75. Feels more like 80 in there though. Every time someone comes in to look at the chicks they start to remove their coats, etc. immediately. I kinda like the warm room, however I seem to be the only one that does.

I'm with you on enjoying the warm room. The high today was 29 degrees. It gets tiresome.

Yeah the kids flew in from the coast and I was nervous cause I forgot to tell them to bring really warm clothes, then I watched the Bay area news and realized it's pretty darn cold there too!

Merry Christmas everyone. I wish everyone a healthy and prosperous New Year. I said it today since I'm super busy and will be busier the next few days. It's warmed up a bit but another storm is heading our way. It will probably miss us like the others but we'll get the wind for sure.

We are headed to Louisville in the morning (after my son gets off work as he wrecked his vehicle and will be riding with us) to my daughter's home for Christmas. We just loaded the doll house we made for our granddaughter in to the car. We did not realize how big this thing was until we got it in there... my son and dog are going to be cramped! Thankfully it is only a 3 hour drive. Having said all of that, I will probably not be around either and wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas!

Beautiful doll house Kat!

Safe travels everyone!

Thanks Betty!

Happy Holidays everyone!
And best wishes for the most wonderful New Year yet!!!

Beautiful doll house. Where are the crochet spreads for the little beds?
