Summer 2012 Granny "Square" Swap (sign ups closed)

Cathy ~ You've got it right :) You'll make a square for each person signed up and in return you'll get a square from each person. Pretty cool deal!!

So.....am I understanding this right.....we make each participant a square? And not assigned a single swap partner? Very cool! Can't wait! Thanks for the welcomes!
Cathy

Betty ~ Love those squares!! For the pattern I used, I watched this video to figure it out:
. I hope it helps!!
Thank you for the info on youtube. I finally figured it out though and finished the block today but just now checked out the website you told me about. I just went to www.halfknits.com and there are free downloads of crochet squares that are really pretty. I only saw the 6" but didn't check to see if there were any 12" ones.

Does Cathy make 13? Did Wishing4wings sign up? I'm making 6" squares as people come in. There's a problem with the 12" squares, so I spent my sick time (feeling better now) taking them apart. I don't need glasses, have been wearing them for decades. It's probably a mindfulness problem. At any rate, I'm down to one done and two started. Rectangles don't exist in my mucus encrusted world.

Smitty-Thank you for your kind offer to help me learn popcorns because I can't figure them out by written instruction. I don't know how we can do that per computer other than skype (that would be fun) & my skype doesn't seem to be working. I'm going to bite the hook and try you-tube as so many others have done.

Sunny-What colors are your new kitchen? I have several colors of cotton yarn and want to make something that will go, if at all possible.

Good Afternoon~

Alethea~ So glad you are feeling better.

I think we are at total of 12 participants counting yourself so far. WishforWings says she can't join at this time, but wants to do the next one. Of course the total number of participants can change between now and the July 31st deadline.

I only have 4 ~ 6" squares complete. I hope to catch up and have a total of 12 ~ 6" complete to be able to keep on top of how many is required at this time and then I can relax and play around w/ some other patterns and the 12" size and try a rectangle.

I would love to help you with the popcorn stitch. Once I had some hands on training I totally understood it. Is there a particular pattern w/ it you are wanting to try. I have to meet DH at the new business right now, but will try to check in later. I know by computer it would be hard unless video. Skype is an excellent idea. We'll have to set it up. How exciting!!!

Plumber are at the new business putting in handicap bathroom, kitchen stuff and behind the bar stuff. I hate to lock them in the run, but Hawks have been hovering around the house lately. There is always the possible coyote raid as well so better safe than sorry.

I'll post a pic #4 square when I get a min. Same sunflower pattern, but did the color combo a little different. I used the cranberry for the center & the petal part and then did the rest just like the rest in bone & cafe latte'.

Happy Monday!!!! I hope every one has a fantastic day!!!!

Well I knew the heat would catch us eventually. It's late, but it is here and to stay all week long. News says it was 108 degrees, but several people reported that they were reading 110 degrees.

Here's a pic of the new pattern I tried. It needs tweaking & finessing.

Very pretty! :)
Sunny~ YAY!!!
clap.gif
So glad you are all moved! I'll get to talk to DD on Sat on her day off from work. She'll be finished working at camp on July 7th, so not too much longer until she will be home and I have a little time with her before she starts college in Aug.

Alethea~ Forgot to add that I hope you feel better!
hugs.gif

I made another sunflower pattern square tonight in diff color combo, so I now have 4 complete squares for the swap. Yippeee!!!

Well we are moved out anyway. Moving in is still a ways away. I think Hubby and I are showing our age. Everything seems to take us so long these days! LOL
OK, I have a confession to make. I have been lurking on your thread since it started, and figured it's time to introduce myself. I haven't wanted to join because of time constraints and lack of experience. I taught myself to crochet 2 years ago so I could make little stuffies (amigurumi), but haven't learned much more than single crochet and I am slooooww, especially at reading patterns with new stitches.

Everyone's work looks beautiful and I have enjoyed reading your posts. (Hope you don't mind!) I hope you are planning another swap for the fall, and I'll try to join in then. I'll practice making squares in the mean time. Question: Is it necessary to block the squares? I'll have to look up how to do that.

Here's a pic of some of my little critters. They were all from patterns. I thought they were irresistible and inspired me to learn.
Nice to meet you!

Hi Wishing!
frow.gif
Absolutely fine to lurk, post or join in the conversation without joining up! That way you will know when the next swap is. If you decide to change your mind before the end of this month just let me know. Happy to have ya!
Wishing4Wings ~ Hi!!!
frow.gif
Those critters are CUTE!! If you can teach yourself how to do that then a granny square should be a breeze :) This is my first swap and I'm really enjoying it. It's giving me something to do when the weather is too hot to go outside or when work is slow. I have a habit of starting a project and then losing steam, but since I know they need to be finished by a certain date I'm just zipping right along. I'm only blocking the squares that are just shy of being 6 inches (I'm one of those people who like things to line up even, lol).

Betty ~ I'm looking forward to seeing your 12 inch blocks!

Alethea ~ I hope you're feeling better!!

Kim ~ Good luck with your next meeting. What kind of shop do you all have? We've started with the triple digit heat here, too.

Sunny ~ I hope you've been getting some rest between moves!

Kate ~ I hope that you all have stayed safe! The NM fires have quieted down now, right? I know that recovery will be a long and slow process...

Everyone stay cool and safe!
hugs.gif
I think rest is gonna have to wait for a month or so.
hmm.png
OK now I feel like I'm whining. haha
Here's an almost 12 inch block. I'm going to take out the last row and make it dc instead so that it will be 12 inches. The lighting in here makes the colors look different--it's the bone, plum and lavender.

I agree with Alethea! Gorgeous!
Lovely square!

I went to Wally World the other day to get my yarn, and turns out the only colours there that are on the list are Lavender Blue and Cranberry... which look absolutely terrible together, in my opinion. Sooo... I still haven't got my yarn :p
Yea I'm having a hard time picturing those two right next to each other. Now the plum with the cranberry would be nice! You don't have to have 2 colors. You could do just one of them. Or... I think Joanns is having a 4th of July sale.
Quote: Oh boy! We will keep our fingers crossed that the arsonist is caught soon and that the 4th goes by without any new fires!!!

Good Morning~

Yesterday was another record breaking triple digit temp day. I think 108 or 110 degrees. Just crazy!!!! Good news it was drier instead of our usual humidity, so not as sticky outside. Bad news about being dry is fear of fires with the 4th coming up soon. I know some areas have canceled their fireworks, b/c it's just so hot & dry. This morning is a nice mild 85*, but is suppose to climb to at least 104*. Just crazy ~ crazy!!! Well, for us it is. We are suppose to get rain on Tue. I sure hope so.

Sunny~ Hi!
frow.gif
I hope you are able to take a rest and relax a little after the big move. You deserve a break.
smile.png
Are you still dealing w/ crazy wind? I hope is dies down for you & Betty.
WOW! 104 is even hotter than it's been here! Good luck keeping cool! The winds have been a lot easier to deal with lately. They are still kicking up but nothing like they were.

Hi everyone,

I just took pix of the blocks I've done so far. I'm trying the one Btownchickmom posted and I don't understand the second row that says to go around the post. Maybe I'm just tired as I've been cleaning all day, you know the scrub the baseboards, corners, etc. in the bathroom. My company will be here the 9th. We are still having afternoon wind but so far not as bad as we were having. We finished the shade over the raised veggie beds. The desert sun is terrible on tomatoes and cucumbers. We covered four raised beds and four containers with a 14x19 cover and I can feel the difference when I am underneath it.

Here are the pix of the blocks completed so far. I am only enthused over one of them but still have some more patterns to try. I haven't tried a rectangle yet and 6" blocks are no problem. I hope everyone has a good weekend and are away from any fires.

Love them!!!
OH I wish I could make these! I haven't tried to yet, but I'm hoping! They are so stinking cute! You've done an amazing job!
When I first started I stuck to simpler patterns and added a new stitch once in awhile. I still can't do the super fancy stuff but I love all the squares in a finished blanket. If all the squares are super intricate the finished afghan can start to look too busy anyway. :)
Hi everyone, my name is Cathy. I live in Maine. I was really excited when I saw that there was a crochet swap! I'm an avid crocheter, knitter, quilter, etc...and a crazy chicken lady too! I would like to join the swap if its open to newbies. I belonged to "crochetlist" for a very long time but haven't been involved in swaps in a few years. Would love to do them again!
~Cathy
Hi Cathy! So happy to have another crocheter join!!! Welcome! I'll add you to the list now.

Cathy
Yep you got it.

Haha! Luckily rectangles are not a requirement. :) Yep Kim is right. We have 12 participants now.
The new kitchen is pretty much just nuetrals. A lot of wood and beige granite counters with dark grey speckles. You are such a Sweetie to do this for me!!!
hugs.gif
So glad to hear that you are feeling better.

Sounds like the worst part is almost over! Can't wait to hear about the grand opening!

Hope you all have a great week and a wonderful and safe 4th!!!

Hey everybody~
frow.gif

We don't have internet at the new business yet, but I borrowed DH's phone to use his personal hotspot internet to feed to my computer so I can use the internet. Gotta feed my BYC addiction!
lau.gif
I'm hanging out down here bored while the plumber works.

Sunny~ Moving in general is so involved.....such a big pain and just takes time. So glad the moving out part is done for you. Hopefully you and your DH can rest in between unpacking boxes to get settled.
hugs.gif
Hang in there! Oh your kitchen sounds so pretty!!! I've always wanted granite counter tops.

Thanks for the compliment on the lav blue square. Too bad it's a wee bit big, but I'll give it a whirl again when I have time. I'm not sure how I feel about the (mis- stitch mistake) sunflower square I made w/ the plum center and cranberry petals. I think the colors clash together.
hmm.png
What do all of you think????

I forgot to tell you all that Norma Jean is a Norman. It crowed this morning...darn it!!!! It's so fru fru looking. He is just gorgeous! 2 out of the 3 Silkies are boys.
sad.png
I will have to see how they get a long, but have a feeling that I won't be able to keep both without them fighting. Boo!!!! I hope the 3rd one is a pullet.

Here's square #4. Woohooo...I have 4 complete!!!
jumpy.gif
My plan to make squares as people sign up isn't quiet working. I know we have PLENTY of time, but will feel better one I catch up to the list.
tongue.png

I know the center looks kind of orange, but it's actually the cranberry color.

Thanks Kim.
I love the square! The middle looks cranberry on my monitor.

Smitty-Nice square.I'm coming to like colors in the center of neutrals. It's like finding jewels in the sand. I've come across popcorns while looking for hats, shawls and squares. They're everywhere. That's why I think it would be good to know how to make them.

If we have 12 including me, then it's 11 per set. I'm just donating this time. I know I said that last time and changed my mind, but if i move again I'm taking my Spring square bedspread/afghan with me.
