Sunflower Chickens

Hi Ivywoods! I finally made it back here to BackYard Chickens!!!! My sis was over for the weekend and we watched the funnel from our basement doorway ---- we were on the south side of it as it came through ---never got low enough to be serious---but anything that looks like a funnel to me no matter how high or how low is serious!!!!

Got the trio settled in! I have to get another house for them--- I moved my banties out and the GL in--- thinking since the GL's were smaller than the Buckeyes that this little house would work for the GLs---but the roo is having to crouch just a tidge and when he tries to get up in to the "bunk" area ---he bumps his head--- have to get him a helmet! Other than that the two hens are still cranking out eggs---never missed a beat!!!! Very pretty birds!

Where do you get your goat panels from? Farm and Home?

We got our panels at TSC in St. Joseph. Glad they are all doing well. I'm having a hard time getting my girls to go in the othe coop. They want to get back in the tractor.

I just moved some eggs from the turners to the hatching tray this morning. I candled them and almost all of them looked good. I think I will have a good hatch. My sister hatched 26 of the little peepers!

Remember Sable? The big nubian I said was close to kidding? She kidded later that night. She had two really, really pretty doelings. We were really happy with them and she is being a good momma.

I have a batch of golden lakenvelders, a few black rosecombs and old english bantams. I also have some black copper marans and some guineas that are a couple weeks away yet.

My two sons are going to be home for the weekend, and I'm hoping they can help me finish my grow out pen for my chicks. I have a bunch of ameraucanas that I ordered, and they are ready to go to larger facilities! Gosh they sure grow fast!

Hello all, I took some time off BYC to get a few projects done. I hope everyone is having a great week glad I got some of my big projects done yesterday, we just got hit with some rain today and looks like the rest of the week will be rainy here. I hope Katy got some more rain. My broody is due to hatch any day now. One question do you hear the chicks peep before hatch? I thought I had another broody but she quit after 2 days on the nest. I am also dealing with my bantam rooster that is has gone mean. He has flogged me 2 days in a row could he be trying to protect the broody? Has anyone ever raised SLW my 2 seem to have a bright red comb and I got them on April 10th so I am not sure if they are roosters or not I will post pictures later. DH got started on the new chicken run the post are in now to get the wire and get that up. Maybe this weekend if it does not rain.

Okay ladies (and gents) - about the poop changes.

Only difference I have seen is in my dogs!!!! Apparently they think the ultra-kibble in Renee's recipe is meant for them! They are all raw fed and have very small very dry "scat." Now it's huge and grainy!!! So - too much information, I know, but the lesson here is - keep the chicken food away from the dogs! Or vice-versa, whichever works for you. Me - I guess the dogs will have to stay inside until I find a better place to put the feed pan.

Hearts and prayers to our neighbors in Joplin.

We do a lot of shopping over there. Most of our favorite places to go are in ruins. And TWC is forecasting more of the same or worse for the next couple days. Might be time to move some of my own "valuables" to the basement.

Have a great day everyone!

Well, as it is storming outside and I can't work out, I took the opportunity to download some pics from my camera, including some I took earlier today. Thought I'd include a couple here. These three girls hatched on the same day and are now 16 weeks old. I am surprised by how red and large the comb and wattles are on the black pullet (all three are "barnyard mixes" but *I* think they're very pretty anyway

She had me fooled for a long time. I couldn't decide if she was boy or girl because she was quite pink at only 3-4 weeks old, yet feathered out and developed like a girl. At 16 weeks she is quite clearly a pullet but the early redness continued and by 12 weeks she was as red and big in the comb as most of my pullets are after they've already started laying! So I'm thinking she might start to lay earlier than average but as she's kept me wondering since hatch, I'm sure she'll continue to do so. Not that it matters - I figure the ones that start to lay later will lay for longer and the rest of my flock is producing more than enough eggs. I'll just be interested in the outcome.

Nope we got .10" the first line that came thru and the second line I'd say about the same....didn't go out with the flashlight to check. Had quite a bit of wind tho. It was the same old story....looks like we're going to finally get a good rain and then it either dies out right west of us or splits and goes around us.
