Sunflower Chickens

Mike - where did you get your wellies? I have a few left, but they are not in their own flock. If it seems the genetics are different, I will try to separate them into their own flock and collect some eggs. One of the hens has been free ranging with a mixed roo and she is laying nice dark eggs. When I found her nest I was surprised how dark they are. One of my hens has gone broody, so may put some of the wellie eggs under her. Anyway, the hens are getting older and don't lay a lot now, but they have had a lot of the eggs with heavy speckles on them. Not sure If I still have a pic of some of them after I fried my old computer.

My birds came from Allan at Valley Feed and grain. He collects eggs from the Mennonites from Southern Kansas and Missouri. :)So far my birds have laid really nice eggs with little or no fadeing. At least until I locked them up to protect them from Mr. Fox. I would be happy to hatch and swap or trade eggs so I can hatch under a hen. Just let me know.

I'm taking a weekend trip down to my sister's.

I'm taking 12 leghorn hens, some lakenvelder chicks and some silver and wheaton ameraucana chicks.

I will be returning with (hopefully!) some brown-red old english and black rosecomb bantams.

I was supposed to get some of the black cochin bantams but her hen died just before she started laying eggs this spring. The chicks I will come back with just went into lockdown yesterday, so hopefully there will be enough hatch that I can get some good ones.

These are all out of her best show stock. Her Rosecombs and cochins were from some that I gave her a few years back. Looks like I will have to locate some bantam black cochins on my own.

I've got some awesome leghorn hens.

They are egg laying machines. I'm thinking I should get a rooster to put in with some of them so I could hatch some layers. I've been totally impressed with the number and size of the eggs out of these ladies. Also, I've always heard that leghorns are flighty. These are not at all. They follow me like I'm the pied piper. They don't necessarily like to be picked up, but they dont mind if I touch them.

In fact....................here's the funny part..........I must be sick or something....

You know how a hen will sometimes stop right in front of your feet and squat down like she is waiting for her rooster partner. These leghorns sometimes do that to me. I reach down, rub and push down on their back and ruff them up a little on their back just in front of their tail. They sit there like they are getting the "real deal" and then they get up and do their little "rooster shake" like they really got something.

I have a question about the lakenvelder do they lay dark eggs I have seen a lot written about this breed but they seem hard to find. I lost my only Ameracauna last winter. She was blue I need to find either blue wheaton or wheaton Ameraucana's do you know a local breeder?

The lakenvelders I have are golden lakenvelders. They lay a medium sized white egg. Mine are laying like crazy right now. I could hatch some chicks for you if you would like.

I have some wheaten ameraucana chicks. I don't know of a local breeder. I ordered these chicks this year from John Blehm.

I am working on the dark brown egg layers and the green egg layers right now, I do miss my big blue egg. I get 3 bantam blue eggs from my EE bantams but I miss the big one strange how that works. I will check next spring and see what you have if that will be okay. Thanks again.

I need some help from my fellow Kansas people. I go to Wichita once every other month. I need to find a good price on some really good feed. I only have 2 choices here, Country lane and Purina Which I don't like either. I would like a natural feed with some fish meal or meat in it without GMO's does anyone that lives in Wichita or the surrounding area know of a great place to get this type of feed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am posting this in the other Kansas thread just to try and get as many answers as I can. Thank you again.

I might be interested in a few chicks from ya... My in-laws are in Seneca so we're up that way quite often!
