Hi. I was just looking through this thread (i'm in missouri but kc, so right by kansas). I use nutrena for my birds. I tried purina but have to drive 30 minutes away to get it, i can get nutrena a few miles away. My chickens also seem to like it better than layena. The layer pellets are bigger, look more like rabbit pellets. My silkies have no problems eating it though.

Does it have animal protein? I like to feed something with animal protein vs vegetarian.

I am not sure but I am going to try it, I will look when I go, I know purina does not have a meat protein. Thanks julienkc for answering my question. this is a new brand so I am excited to have another option.

I thought I'd look next time I'm there too. Purina's sunfresh recipes don't have animal protein, but some of their other brands do.....I use their Home Grown brand.

I threw away the tag on my layer food, but the one on my game bird food says it contains animal protein, so I would think they both do. Maybe that's why they like it better...Little monsters, lol.

Is this referring to what I had said? I'm sorry maybe I need to clarify what I mean. I'm lucky to have someone like Renee close by that wants to try and prefect the feeds but if I didn’t have her to work with I would look into trying out this new type of feed. If it wasn’t referring to what I said please just disregard. I don’t know enough about the feeds to really have a good opinion but I do like to fallow up and learn with wrong answers so that I have the opportunity to be corrected. Sometimes that’s the only way to get an answer.

I don’t think we have that here at our Orscheln's in Ottawa. I wonder if it’s any good. I would try aslo asking about this in the Feeding and water threads and see who has been able to give it a try. Maybe it’s still working its way around the country.

Yes, Orscheln's in Ottawa. It's made by Nutrina.

Sorry I was upset by an earlier post and there where people all posting at the same time. This was not meant at what your or Renee said. Sorry I was having an frustrating moment. I am sorry. I am glad that Renee is on the boards I have learned a lot from her. I am just looking for a feed that is more natural and does not drain the check book. My comment was about meat birds and using game bird feed vs. chick starter grower which I find to cost way more then the game bird feed we have here in my area. Thanks for all the help with the newer feed I found at orshelins (sp) I am going to look at the label and if it has meat protein I am going to give that a try.

They need a higher protein diet then layers like a gamebird feed 22% they are meat birds most of their enegry goes to getting big fast, Most people don't worry about feathers since they butcher between 8-10 weeks of age. good luck.

The meat birds do take forever to feather out, and often they will grow out to a certain point and then they sometimes have heart attacks prior to getting very old because they grow so fast. Don't let them have their feed overnight and just know they won't feather out nearly as fast as other breeds.

Don't get attached, because they won't live long whether you want to process them or not.

DH's biggest concern.
He tells me "Don't start cuddling these chickens, Don't name these chickens, and for PITY'S SAKE do not fall in love with these chickens!"
He grew up on a cattle ranch (there is no sentamentality on a cattle ranch)
