Support Group for Abused Duck Keepers

When the egg gets bruised and never hatches how can we help the duckling? I have had that happen before and was not sure what went wrong with the egg or how to handle it. After opening the egg later on I found a fully formed duck with no veins or egg yolk and it broke my heart.
The rule is see a bruise and make a safety hole immediately
I have hatched a few this way and they are just fine
Egg was a bit to small and baby couldn’t turn
In this case I saw the bruise but it really looked like baby was in the air cell so I didn’t act on the bruise
Once I saw no movement I opened it up and saw baby never made the air cell it was trying right beside it
I was so angry at myself cause I know better
I’m really good at assisting and not loosing any
Lesson learned see the bruise no matter what make the safety hole if baby ends up in the air cell then great if baby doesn’t then the air hole will save her

This may sound crazy but I must ask to make sure. You make the safety hole in the air cell not where the bruise is right? Thanks so much for your information.

Also what do you make your safety holes with? I used a sharp screw but the shell was so hard that it took forever to make it. It did save the duckling but I worried about it being in my hand for so long. Thanks again for the information.

No I make the hole in the middle of the bruise
Not a big one but this gives them the air so they don’t suffocate
Usually I can candle over the bruise and see where the veins are so I don’t hit one
After 24 hours as we act like that’s the air cell pip then I can make the hole just a little bigger
I use to go dime size amd slowly over 24 -36 more hours make the hole bigger but then you are constantly wetting the membrane
This batch I had 9 of 10 need assisting (2 wrong ends and the other 7 made the internal pip but not external) One hatched himself with zero help
But this time I didn’t make the hole bigger overtime
After the 24 hours I made it a bit bigger size of an pencil eraser end and didn’t need to wet the membrane at all
I didn’t touch that hole again until I hatched them
I was able to candle the egg on the sides not the air cell and see veins
Once I could see they were done I opened the egg and babies were perfectly finished with no sticky membrane and no dried ones
That will be how I do it from now on
The way I look at it is babies only make 1-2 little pips until they hatch so they don’t need big holes when we help
When we make bigger holes they are trying to push themselves out way before they are absorbed and ready and we panic thinking they want out and hatch them way to soon
We also chance hitting veins and needing to be in the bator every few hours to coat the membrane and this dries it out
The shell protects the membrane , baby and yolk to stay moist so leaving as much on as possible but still getting them air was a big success for me this time
I did loose the one only because I didn’t act on her bruise
The other 8 I helped all hatched good
Here is a few pictures
2 of the wrong end bruising
Safety hole and then when I made it a bit bigger and you can see I can candle and see inside to see veins
Other pic of 2 that didn’t external and I made safety holes then made a bit bigger and left them that size till hatch time
Hope this helps anyone needing to assist in the future

Look at how big they are getting 😭. Their bills used to be after the size of their head but now they’re the same size.
Also almost set them down on a nope rope, but moved them to an area with “weeds” and hoses. I took both pictures with my phone, but I’ll upload my camera pictures later for the one I just took.

Those pictures are great!

"Nope rope" is that what we're calling them these days!
