Glad to hear from you! I was worried something had happened!Been a long time since I have been on
We bought an acreage and have been crazy busy working on things
We also added turkeys , chickens , more geese , goats and 2 emus
I have had 2 broody ducks since moving here. One hatched 6 babies but one died at 24 hours old
Other 5 are doing great
Second mom has hatched 2 with a few more to go but she ended up stealing eggs from another broody leaving her nest to be staggered hatch
Second mom has yo babies that are the cutest little things
The way they hide around mom
Always a different way each day
I lost the blue Swedish babies mom to egg bound 2 weeks ago
So happy one of her eggs was under my silver girl
I knew it was a possibility
I have named these 2
The silver baby is surf as she is always on moms back
Blue baby is Rain. Her moms name was stormy
Loosing both stormy and dasher was toughGlad to hear from you! I was worried something had happened!
Sorry for all the duck losses though.Hope the new homestead is all you wished for!
I am so sorry! How heartbreaking!Loosing both stormy and dasher was tough
I felt cursed and very broken
Dasher I knew one day I would loose her after her complications from that Lupron shot I had prayed I would have more time with her
The day she went I knew she was off
I brought her inside and cuddled her
When it was time to feed the few supper I laid her on some straw in a crate with the lid off
Ran and did chores
When I came back in she was nearing the end
I picked her up in my arms and told her how much I loved her and I was sorry I couldn’t help
She took a few breaths and died in my arms
My beautiful baby I hatched on Xmas day in 2021
Stormy caught me off guard
Never had egg issues from her
I tried myself to get the egg out but it wasn’t coming
I took her yo the vet and they kept her overnight. Did pain meds , fluids and some drug to help contract
Didn’t help
The egg was stuck and surgery was risky as she could still die and 2000 minimum to do it as she would have to be sent to Saskatoon avian
I made the decision to have her put down
My vet was kind enough to open her up for me at no cost to see what happened
She was full of infection in her track and stomach
She isn’t sure if this was due to the egg being in there so long
I noticed on a Saturday and the vets were closed on the holiday Monday
So she went in on Tuesday
Wednesday is when they put her to rest
Egg was stuck for at least 5 days
Rip my 2 girls
How are things with you ?
I completely understandI am so sorry! How heartbreaking!
I'm doing okay, animals (even the ducks!) are tired of being damp all the time. If it isn't cold and raining (high of 16 today!!!), it's hot and humid and nothing is drying. Got a couple of bales of straw today so they have some dry spots to stand in, but I need at least five more and won't be able to get them until September.
Trying to decide who's staying and who's going. There's a livestock sale on Sept 8th and I'll try to sell all my extra females.
Gooselings are doing well, they grew so fast! Looking forward to more babies in the Spring, hopefully!
AND, dreading Winter already, lol. So many things still need to be done, but I can't do them alone and there's never anyone around to help when I need it.![]()
