Support Group for Abused Duck Keepers

Hey guys
I had a family reach out on a Facebook group
They have a duck that’s got Niacin deficiency ( really bad )
They are new to ducks and just hatched her June 20
They had no idea about this issue
She use ti walk but was shaky
Now she can’t walk at all
Her feet are curling up and her right leg stays out
She uses her wings to get around
She was in much worse shape 2 months ago as she couldn’t move her neck and that’s when they found online about niacin
They did start niacin pills in feed and her neck did start working but her legs are still in bad shape
She can paddle to swim in water
She eats and drinks well
I offered to try to help her
They drove 4.5 hours today to bring her ti me
I have durvet B compex here plus niacin pills and nutritional yeast
I also can do swim therapy 3 times a day
Has anyone read or heard of a duck recovering once it gets to this point
This little girl who loves this duck was so upset
I’m going to do all I can to help this duck and hopefully be able to send her home
How is the duck?

ok no one has to read this but I'm just going to vent real quick.
ok I have 2 ducks, FitnessGram pacer test and Toilet paper. both pekins.
I just bought them a over $100 dollar pool less than a month ago and I have a little thing in it to keep it from freezing and one of them dragged it out and the whole thing froze solid and the side cracked so now I can't use it and I have to buy a new one.

"Hmm. No I don't think so. This doesn't belong in my pond."
"Servant!! My pool has frozen!! How dare you let this happen!"

Sounds about right
Interesting names BTW!

How is the duck?
She is doing really good
Big improvements over the last 2 weeks
When I got her she hadn’t stood on her feet since she was very young. The last time they remembered her getting around without her wings she used her knees ( months ago )
Now she is taking steps on her feet
Not fully lifted and still shaky and a bit wobbly but she still did it
She is such a sweet girl
Wants on my lap anytime she can
She was also leaning hard on her left side ( looking at her from the back )
But I worked on facia pulling and got her back straightened again
Her right leg use to stay way out to the right. It’s staying under her most of the time now
They also said even her neck looks better
She had dragged her wings and webs along sand till she got sores on both
She is no longer dragging her feet or using her wings
I ran 5 days of tetracycline as she did have a fever when I got her
Gave Medicam to help as well
Her fever is gone and her wings have healed
Even growing new feathers
Her foot is looking much better but still rough and may take longer to get soft again but infection is gone
She gets baths everyday
Along with 1ml durvet vitamin B complex
Also in her water I am using vitamins my vet gave me for my birds
A,C and D
I’m n her feed she gets nutritional yeast and niacin pills sprinkled in
May take a few more weeks but I’m hopeful she will walk again

Best advise I can give
Don’t let them swim outside if it’s cold enough to freeze
They can be silly birds and love ti create mess 😆

You have done a great job with her! She is lucky that you found her in time to save her. Lucky Ducky!!!

Merry Christmas everyone!!

today, Dougie turns 3! And since its also Christmas, the girls got a very exciting breakfast!

On top of their normal feed, we have oats, watermelon and strawberry, and mealworm sprinkles!

Needless to say they loved it, and this is what it looked like 30 seconds later...

I wanted to add an egg into the assortment, but I knew if I put an egg in the bowl then Sprightly wouldn't touch anything. (She detests the texture of egg).
So Dougie will get a cracked egg for tea. I'm sure Sprightly will help her demolish the shell at least!

Happy Christmas! That looks delicious (except the mealworms)! Very lucky duckies!
