Support Group for Abused Duck Keepers

Poor girlie, is she feeling better today?
Happy birthday to all!
Sprightly had some issues a little bit ago, she's feeling better again though :)
I found her outside after dark and not in like the others
I went and picked her up and she had stringy mucus coming out
I grabbed a crate and brought her inside
I ran a bath and while in the crate she pooped out more mucus and a quarter size of soft shell ( membrane
Her tail was down and her walk was slower before she pooped that out
We bathed twice and gave her calcium
Then she was fine. No more mucus and her tail / walking was back to normal
Dasher is in a molt so she really shouldn’t be laying eggs. This girl started in April 2022 and hasn’t stopped yet
She has gone through 2 bouts of aspergillosis with months of treatments. She was given hormones to stop laying eggs and nothing stopped her :(
But the hormone shots did ruin her eggs
Her last hormone shot was in April 2023
They went from nice thick hard shells to very thin hard shells that would break often while laying them or as soon as I picked it up
Never went back to normal in 8 months
She is Canada’s most expensive duck as we have spent well over 3500 closer to 4000 in vet bills
Luckily my vet was on call last night and told me use a glove and lube and feel for any egg
I didn’t feel anything inside her
I do have antibiotic here on hand as she keeps me with a supply
I ended up letting her dry off and then took her out with her flock. She was eating like crazy and running around with them
It’s still dark here so I haven’t gone out this morning
But if we need her vet is on call so she will meet me

Poor girl! She’s in the best care possible.

She's a very lucky duck having you to look after her!
Sprightly had a heap of issues too, with soft shells and being egg bound this year- things are gradually getting better now with the winter break she's had.
Hope you and yours had a lovely Christmas! 🎄

The girls enjoyed their Christmas. Dougie had a good birthday.
My partner and I sung happy birthday for her, and then I lifted her into the air and we continued with a few rounds of "for she's a jolly good fellow" which she found extremely funny. She devoured several grapes and a slice of water melon (with Sprightly's help of course). And then both the girls sought me out for cuddles before they went to bed. A good day all in all. And the neighbours (who moved here a week ago) may now believe me to be mad.

Better to be a mad bird mom than “normal.”
I shudder just thinking about how bland other people‘s lives are.

Just an update on Dasher
I did find the other part of her egg the next morning outside. It was frozen so it looks odd but I could tell the long part was the rest of the soft shell along with clear egg stuff and no yolk
I don’t believe it broke inside of her just a little of the membrane was left
She was happy and her normal self yesterday
Last night at dark she was in with the flock and eating up a storm
She is such a beautiful girl that I became very close to over the past year while dealing with all her environmental aspergillosis issues
When you have to hold the duck several times a day for meds and cleaning the vent you build a bond :)
She is also crate trained to go in when asked with all the vet visits we had to make 😆
I got a picture with the birthday girl yesterday

Well I’m here to report goose self abuse 😆
Poor Stella laid a massive egg today
She didn’t lay yesterday on her scheduled day and I think it’s cause she was building a massive egg
Hers have been around 132-140
This was 195
Very heavy to hold
Stella is doing fine but wow
