Surviving Minnesota!

Lol not a terrible idea

I have a call out to the building inspector, waiting for a call back to schedule my final sign off. Hopefully Friday morning. I have 1 door knob to install and a couple pieces of garage door stop ( the rubbery but that deals against the garage door) tonight and I'm ready. I haven't had the outside cement poured yet and I'm debating just dumping some gravel on for the winter and doing it in the spring when we have other cement work happening with the house. Might save some money that way
I would wait and do it all at once. My husband prefers to do it all at once rather than one here or there. Plus it is nearly the end of the pouring season. I would just wait. You'll get better results.

Thanks for the Ovation Minnie. But all kudos go to you. He's amazing. You mentioned white on the wings...I'm not seeing any on him. But that comb...my only trepidation about him and this winter. LOL. We'll ride it out...nothing else to do about it.

A good boy, too. He let me pick him up tonight. Although...I don't want to do it too much. He hasn't taken a run at anybody at all. **Knock on wood**. He's unsure of himself yet-skiddish. But I do believe he's established dominance over all the hens except the two old girls. (4 year old originals) Not too bad.
I have yet to come across an ill-tempered Welsummer. I love them for that! Their color IS Partridge, so they will resemble Ralphies PCs some, but those Chanteclers are a darker version.

I am telling you, I am envious of that JR. I have 3 left out here to choose for keeping and I need to pick them up and look for white I have a few pullets but they are 5-6 months down to 8 weeks old. I know one has a white feather on her wing so she is going Sunday to a neighbor.

I find that Wellies are more gentle breeders too but still will do the job, whereas I find many others rough and stupid when they are young and tear the girls up. You are going to want to keep Welsummers after you see how wonderful the boys can be as he matures. His comb looks to be of a smaller size than some of mine have been, so there is that ;) Keep it dry and keep it greased!

Oh man, 2000 posts to catch up on! I clearly can't have a baby - I miss too much on here!

I hope everyone is doing well! Winter is fast approaching. My yard is full of naked trees and naked chickens. What a horrible time to molt. We've been working on getting separate coops for the peacocks and ducks put in place. My hubby brought home a huge shipping crate which will be a perfect house for the ducks after a few modifications. My chickens hate them in the coop! The peacocks pretty much hate the chickens and the ducks....and us....so they'll be getting an old shed with a ton of vertical height. Aside from that, we'll wrap the runs in a few weeks or so. I need to get a truck load of hay bales one of these days, too. good thing I love all my little feathered dinosaurs....so much work in the late Fall/Winter months.

True story.......

Heck ya my flock would be double it's current size

another busy day. My inspection is officially scheduled for friday morning, Im still getting used to the idea that im done!!. I got a load of tractor parts in the mail today, got the WD running and had a crack at the C carb however i am fighting to get the new float tweaked right. First there was no gas, now there is gas but not fast enough flow so you cant get above a low idle without it sucking faster than the gas flows.

I got a new toy on loan from my dad and i thought you old tractor fans would enjoy. My dad resurected this from him mom's (my grandma's) shed a few years back and i think it is so neat. you dont see them anymore. This is a Cub Cated 125 Hydro with a loader! I am using it to finish the grading around my garage. (My Cub mower for scale) its got dual hydraulics which I think is incredibly amazing for this little tractor.

"Rockies" might give you a good pair.

I'm shopping for Barn coats. DH has been yipping about me wearing his carharts in the coop during the winter. He's not real appreciative of the cecal poop stains. LOL. Should I do a canvasy type barn coat or a diamond quilted rayon type?
Got a Fleet Farm up your way? I got a hooded lined Carhart type coat that I wear in the cold and it cost way less than Carhart, it is a Berne brand. It is actually too warm to wear with much underneath besides a sweatshirt or turtleneck. I just toss it into the wash and it cleans a lot easier than the Carharts.
I don't like nylon, it catches on all the chicken wire and hardware cloth.

They are black. Besides dusting the coop with DE and raking it in good and then dusting the hens what should I do to the coop to rid lice and mites? I itch every single time I do in there now. Ugh! What does everyone do to the wood in the coops to disinfect them. I should know this - and I have articles on it - but what do you all do?
Besides the poultry dust in the nylons on the chickens, I use that bag to do all the crevices, cracks and what not. I also do neem oil on the roost and on the wood of the nest boxes. Nasty business mites. I see you said you do the hens, how about the rooster? Any time I see my hens start to shake their heads I give them a quick puffing. Seems to keep any creepy crawly's at bay. I use the pine shavings from tractor supply for bedding, flakes so they don't eat as much of it as the smaller pieces.

Jerry, I would not think too badly of those folks that came to see what was happening when you were using your chain saw. They were quite likely Swedish. Curious but lacking in other attributes?
Hey, I resemble this remark!
