Surviving Minnesota!

Morning all. Recovering from a full afternoon of work yesterday and then overindulging in captain Morgan while suffering the presidential debate. Temps weren't too bad down here today. Looks to be a nice fall wrrkend

I'm sleeping in too late. Need to get to my coop. Sounds like I need digging out DHs Carhartt jacket. Radio said 26.

I also need to stop at friends house and get her chickens out as I am chicken sitting this mea weekend. I'm behind! I'll be back later.

Jerry, if you give me the address that those logs are located at I can arrange for their removal for safe keeping over the winter??

Holm, I would be careful about that hugging the cows talk. I once knew of a farmer who ended up divorced after his wife found him hugging a cow intimately!

Many locations above the Mn. Banana Belt in the 20's this morning. Winter is fast approaching as there were snow flakes in the air yesterday. Spotted a Minnesota Forest Chicken eating apples in one of my ornamental crabs yesterday. Although some would harvest it for dinner, I did not. I may attempt to capture it for use in a cross breeding experiment?

Ralphie, good luck at the show. I wish I could come to visit you, but I believe I may be in Omaha at an auction of imported Irish racing pigeons.

I will not reveal the location .That is why I will not have them sawed into lumber and stacked in my absence for the winter . They can start in the spring and I will make a trip to pay for what is in the stacks . Best I can do .

Need to get outside and start the roof tear off . Radar shows no more rain . I located 2 pair of Dark Brahma LF local . Going to trade for them Saturday . Those who know me know I will be doing a crossing project . May pan out or not . Trying is the only way to know .

Ivie: I would powder and dust corners with the nylon Sevin sock after you've vaccuumed, laid down paint, let it dry and then put the shavings back in. Then really go to town on your nooks and crannies. And do your weekly dustings once a week for 2-3 weeks. Neem oil on those roosts. As I type I've got my wheels working for some work and cleaning down at the coop. Even if it's in preventive measure.

Ahhhh. I put on DH's carhartt this morning. It's like your favorite quilt being wrapped around you the. sleeves are soft and frayed. It's flexible and worn perfectly. I will buy a new stiff one I guess. I should get the bibs too. Those are nice on the -20 or so days. Thanks all for input. Carhartt it is. I see a style I like.

Dark Teal or Classic Carhartt brown? Ladies? ( Ed and Jerry are probably losing their minds right now....LOL.)

http://dungarees.net/product_Carhartt_101405_Newhope_Sandstone_Jacket_Fleece_Lined-7584-1.html My gut is telling me to go with the classic Carhart color...but I love that teal color.

Ralphie, the imported Irish birds will sell somewhere in the area $300 to $1,000 with some selling in excess of $1,000. The Mitchell race was a tough race for all due to wind speed and direction.
I had only 1 bird on the day which was 5th in the club, but I got nearly all of my 25 birds back and some others were much less fortunate. We had a second race from that same location on the same day. It was a special futurity race with substantial money prizes, and only two of us got birds in race time. First place was a club mate from Bemidji who is 53 miles shorter than I in race distance and also more favorable location as relates to wind condition on that day. That is my excuse for not winning, and I am sticking with it.

Morning all. :)

I lost a young pullet this morning.

I went out to feed them this morning, and noticed she was looking unhappy... ruffled feathers, didn't want to eat. I picked her up to check for the obvious, eyes didn't look sick, she didn't feel thin, had food in her crop, checked for lice or mites and she looked clean. I set her down and went out for more feed while figuring out what to do with her. I came back in, and she was seizing, (might have just been dying shakes, I don't know.) I walked up to her and watched the life leave her eyes. It was so weird! I'm wondering if she had something stuck in her throat or something, and when I flipped her on her back to check for mites it made it stick? She did seem to be gasping when she was seizing, but she went so quickly I didn't even have time to react. She had a bit of fight left in her when I was checking her out, so she wasn't that close to death if she was just sick. I can't figure out what else it could be? I have never seen a chicken die so quickly before.

I can't bring myself to cut her open to find out, but I did feel her throat and didn't feel anything obvious.

I have no idea what it can be. I know I have heard, seen and repeated, Many times you do not know your chicken is sick until it is dead.

Bert is that way, after all the fly strikes and injuries to his back side I think he is on his way out. I have been smelling him for a week or more when he is under my feet. Which is most the day, he likes to hang close to me. I think he knows I will swat away any other rooster that tries to attack him.

Yesterday, I decided to try and give him a bath to get rid of the stench. When I put him in the tub and started rubbing him down I found his butt and backside is rock hard. I think what I was smelling is infection or gangrene.

I put Bert in a solitary "room" with a heat lamp to help keep him warm. But I told Judy, Bert will not be with us long.

I am sorry to hear you lost your chicken Sleepy. I also understand not opening her up. condolences.
