Surviving Minnesota!

And the price isn't bad

I was clerking for Diana... You had to look on the feet and the feather stubs were apparent. The one was really bad and other only had a few.

I was not meaning to imply they were not there. They were, I guess, I just never thought they were feathers. Until I put my glasses on and looked really good at them it looked just like a scale of poop to me. I had to ask what "stubs" were, Trevor showed me them, and Don told me washing birds can bring them out in some cases. Or Oiling the legs like I did.

Don Was an interesting guy. He told me lots. After the judging was done Art talked to me about my SS. He was impressed with them. Wanted to know where I got them. Seemed a little shocked when I told him I traded a legbar rooster for a trio. He said mine were better than his. He showed me what direction to work with them to get even better. He is really into the details.

He also looked at and commented on the PC's with me. It seems I picked the wrong one to show. However, I did not have a lot of choice on them as I did not get many chicks after I decided to try and show some. I now know how to tell if penciling is good and how to check it..

Diana and I talked for about a half hour and she went over all my birds too. She really liked the smaller Dom that she disqualified. She said it was a good bird except for the stubs.

She asked about the legbars and why some had crest and some don't.. I told her because they are not accepted in the APA yet, I brought a rooster that would be disqualified once the SOP's go into effect. They must have a crest. The cream one had one defect being it is almost Crele. Crele is going to be an acceptable color

. The white one has no crest, the cream one has a very small one, you have to look close to see it. A crest is required, but so is a comb with 7 points. The challenge is getting a straight comb with 7 points and a crest on one little head. I have rooster with crests but the comb becomes mangled. I wish one of the pullets would have laid yesterday, the egg color is so unique...

Leaving here for New ulm in minutes now..

Minnie Everyone said to just pluck them, so faking or not, I will check between toes from now on.

What do you guys think about naked necks? I'm thinking about getting some

I love my naked neck rooster. Igor squats for me and let's me carry him around but he's very protective of the girls and quite a gentleman. He's also a great guard rooster crowing with his crowing and chasing people he doesn't like (he likes the UPS guy though...) I've hatched several batches and as long as the eggs aren't from my game hen, the chicks have a sweet personality. The ones from the game hen were named Thing 1 and Thing 2 - mean little things that started fighting at about 6 weeks.

Zelda is from a different breeder and a bit younger. She's kind of flighty (half the size of Igor) but she lays nice eggs, just not in the laying box :barnie

So, the short answer, great birds and I'd have more if my neighbors didn't make such fun of them.

Heading to church in Fairfield, have a 4H meeting at 3.
My grandparents are giving me my birthday present while I'm there. I had a dream it was a horse but that's very unlikely

@KlopKlop Just saw this display in HyVee last night. I had to take a picture and chuckle. Maybe there is another plant elsewhere? I should have looked at the label to see where they showed it came from.

I hope this isn't too soon, Ralphie, but most of us have had our experience meeting up with deer on the road

I am back...

I took Judy out for breakfast and a morning drive. She seems to have failed to see how special it was.

One of the hens laid an egg on the way home. It must have broke open or one of them broke it. We heard a "fight" noise from the cage and next thing a piece of yolk flew up and landed on Judy's jacket. Somehow that was my fault. I guess laughing was not the right response.

EJB and Jerry. I have decided to have a "Chicken Cuddling class for Men" to help get over the stigma some men feel over cuddling a chicken. The fee is very reasonably, and I will supply the chickens, you just need to bring treats. No cameras at this class to help with your self esteem. However, the next class in the series, " kissing your chicken" will have cameras.

I have probably said too much about the show in New Ulm, but I really enjoyed it. EJB I have to thank you for the job you did on the PC's! I showed the three I got from you, (the old birds) and they did the best of the bunch. Somehow in my breeding I went backwards. I am hoping it was just the immaturity of my birds that held mine back. I am going to start collecting eggs for next years birds in about 2-3 weeks.

Have any of you tried "stocking caps" on your roosters? I am thinking of making little stocking caps for my single comb roosters. It would mean cage raising them until spring and only letting them out on nice days to breed. I am thinking of making the caps out of wool socks.

(Please try to keep the laughter down)..

I could be talked into pigeons really easily. There were some pigeon at the show and they were so darn cute, walking around all puffed up and show-offy. I could fed them for a year on what I feed my chickens in a month. Besides I bet 3 pigeon eggs makes a nice omelet.

I am done showing unless I take some Legbars to Oklahoma next month. the WWD is not really onboard for me to make that trip. We will see.

Well. time to head to the barn.
