Surviving Minnesota!

Roads were so-so either partially covered or wet. And when the sun set you couldn't tell if it was ice or wet. Roads finally dried 10 miles north of Rice Lake. Which is around an hour from my moms house. It was not a relaxing trip. Although the 3 remaining kids rode very well without fighting.

How long ago was that?

We finished in June 2015.
But if you ask most people who built there own houses they'll tell you the same thing we will. It'll never be done

we still have to put trim on. My grandparents who redo houses all over SD have a garage loft that they converted to a 2 bed 2 bath for themselves and they've lived in it for at least 6 years and still have one piece of trim not on

Trim is over rated. I have a goal to put another piece up in 2017.

Cool. My case is probably a bit different. I already owe money on the property, and I need bank financing to build.

In a perfect world we would blitz in paying off our loan and then built but I don't think DW would want to wait another 5-6 years living in poverty haha. We would have to spend every last dime on the mortgage. Then we would have the freedom to do as we please. We are fortunate enough to have had the means (and fiscal responsibility) to have all of our other debt paid off already. No car loans or student loans or the like.

That makes me day dream about being totally debt free.... sigh.... no mortgage would be amazing.

Our goal this year was around the windows. Nope

. We can try for 2017

Yeah. Our house didn't cost much, 1 floor, 4 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, 1 office, and its basically all an open floor plan.
How my dad thought about it was what do you really do in a house, you sleep, eat, visit, and you are on an electronic device or TV. So we made our house according to those concepts.
No load bearing walls so when all of us kids move out if my dad wants he can knock out a wall and put something else in. Or make a bigger room out of 2 bedrooms.

Hardest thing was the trusses they were 54 feet long...

And I should add the door and window trim is all the prefinished mega basic ranch trim

My dad still isn't sure what we're doing for trim.we used Blue stain pine for the whole house it was cheaper then blonde at that time so we went with it. Now its more expensive and they aren't really logging in those areas anymore.
Blue stain pine is from the trees those beetles kill in SD

Ahh, When we remodeled this old house, we had custom build Hickory cabinets made, ( I did not make them but did install them)

I used windows that were here and in good shape with a good R value, but I had to cut and replace all the trim to match the cabinets. (what a pain). I do not have them done but I have been fairly busy with other more major projects. I am not using Hickory for the trim though, way too expensive for that and I make too many errors to be able to afford to throw that much hickory away. So using other woods and getting the stain to match or closely match the cabinets is a PITA.

If I had unlimited funds and unlimited help to finish all the things I need to get done, the trim would all be in. ButI am guessing when my Grandchildren own this place, they will be still hanging trim.

Your house sounds kind of like my house will be. Basic but roomy. Our trusses will span the 30' way though not the 55' way. Front half will be vaulted, back not. All the bedrooms and bathrooms in the back, living space and kitchen in the front
