Surviving Minnesota!

:barnie ........leaky waterers. They were fine for many many moons - then poof - Drained them for winter and didn't use them cuz I haven't had good winter luck with them in the past; and now they all leak this spring. Double walled type. No, they don't get carried by the handle on the cover part; no they aren't hanging waterers; and yes we've caulked them where we *think* they are leaking. :( Phooy. What are some of your guys' summer water systems looking like??? I'd like something where I don't necessarily have to lug 5 gallon buckets every day to fill. And DIY doesn't scare us!

A black sled that's about 4 inches deep, 1 foot wide and 4 feet long maybe. Holds anywhere from 15 to 20 gallons.

Having a very hard time with this. 4 grams of sugar equals about 1 tsp. We, as a people, need to attempt to keep our daily sugar intake to about 6 tsp per day. Has anyone paid attention to this? Right now I feel like this is never going to happen. I am addicted!

I know that one gram of fat equals 9 calories. To loose weight I usually successfully limit my fat intake to 20%. So if I am taking in 100 calories - 20 of them can be fat so that is about 2 grams.

Gee guys - thanks for letting me bounce this off of you. I really appreciate your listening.

50 gallon blue food grade barrel with water cups about 10-12 inches high and you have the most perfect waterer. Add a cup vinegar every time you refill it just to keep the ickys out and youll be good for a month. Although some put fresh water in the a few times a month but I dont and the water stays so clean I would drink it. Maybe... Ok probably not but still. It stays nice.

I watch mine somewhat, I can mostly keep mine to about 6 tsp. Unless there is chocolate in the house.

Where did you steal that idea?? I knew I should have put a watermark on my waterers to stop someone from seeing them and passing the idea off as theirs.

This was one from a few years ago. I set a 35 gal barrel inside a 55 barrel cut about 6 inches deep I drill a hole in the bottem and let the water seep out.

Waterers ! Everything I have tried has flaws or failures unique to it . Nipple drinkers drip . The low pressure fail in time . The chick type gunk up and no water or the stick or come apart and flood . The low pressure cup work good until they stick and flood . Got some that will flood no matter what . Figured out they need new o rings . Look ok just not sealing . I feel your pain .

Found my first of the season or it found me .

We have something similar, except out of the barrel is a garden house hooked up to a 1/4 inch pvc pipe on inside of coop. Pvc pipe has 7 drinking cups. Barrel is in the feed storage area of building. If you decide to use pvc pipe make sure to get the connection t's they save you a lot of swearing.

In the winter I have the plastic cheap white and red fount on a cookie tin heater. I need to fill it once every day and a half for nine birds. $2.50 for each part of that fount. I have two of these in the summer in strategic locations. One at coop. One up at the house. I have 9 birds so a barrel is unnecessary for me. I also have low marshy spots and the birds will drink out of these spots instead of the founts. Waterers empty slowly now that there's free ranging. Except on windy days I notice it evaporates faster. I want a fancy pottery one for my garden. Cobalt blue. It will have to be on the sly as they are $95-$115. But they are gorgeous. Rock Bottom Pottery on Etsy. Edited to change price. Ouch!

The cookie tin heaters actually work?

I was under the impression they only worked if you lived somewhere warm like MO or WV....
