Surviving Minnesota!

The girls are just eating and eating those green shoots coming up. I love them getting their greens. Bright orange yolks make me happy too.

I know this is nothing new to many of you but I love watching their seasonal foraging habits. Late summer they'll be grabbing grass seed heads and focusing especially on the purple crab grass seed in the lawn. Each part of foraging season has its 'dinner specials' different big hatches and such. Dragon flies, small moths, and June bug season. Frogs are always hunted. They are so fun to observe. I believe they are working on the young clover right now as well as it unfurls. I've heard it's sweeter in the spring.

Anyways...

Well I have decided it is time to rehome one of my Buckeye roosters. Decided it just wouldn't be smart to use him for breeding. He has the most amazing temper and is great with hens.I Was going to cull him with some old hens but decided I had to give him a chance at a longer life. Dont want a penny for him. If you come get him you can have him. If anyone's interested or has any questions PM me.

ETA I can haul him to Brainerd this weekend or he can be picked up here.

Where did you steal that idea?? I knew I should have put a watermark on my waterers to stop someone from seeing them and passing the idea off as theirs. This was one from a few years ago. I set a 35 gal barrel inside a 55 barrel cut about 6 inches deep I drill a hole in the bottem and let the water seep out.
You better watermark your feeders too! Lots of people ask me about them when I buy the supplies but I do let them know that "a friend of mine" taught me how to make them!

Here's my waterer. I move it once a day and refill it anywhere from one to 2 times a day.

I have to get to post the no waste feeders on here already!!@

:barnie ........leaky waterers. They were fine for many many moons - then poof - Drained them for winter and didn't use them cuz I haven't had good winter luck with them in the past; and now they all leak this spring. Double walled type. No, they don't get carried by the handle on the cover part; no they aren't hanging waterers; and yes we've caulked them where we *think* they are leaking. :( Phooy. What are some of your guys' summer water systems looking like??? I'd like something where I don't necessarily have to lug 5 gallon buckets every day to fill. And DIY doesn't scare us!

Low walled rubber trugs, or just the rubber feed pans is what I use. Cheap, sturdy, and easy to clean.

I also use a rubber dish in summer, up on a platform so they don't poo in it. I don't have a large flock, so 1 gallon to refill once a day.

ha ha Thanks :D  yea I was just venting this morning and he usually knows his place ;)  but this stomach thing I think is really throwing him for a loop. I'm over it now, but I still told him to sleep with one eye open hee hee...

I have plenty of herbal remedies but he won't even try them (thick skull)...I did manage to get him to drink some bone broth so hopefully he's on the mend.

Hahahaha!

I am just counting my blessings and crossing my fingers I can survive the last of the season without catching THE FLU. It helps that DH and I don't leave the farm much; and don't have germ infested terrorists *cough, erhm* .... Kids.... around the house. My brother and his family just had this go thru this past weekend and he said he lost 8 pounds since Saturday night :th

Yes, germ infested terrorit's is the correct word. A guy I work work is always sick, always after they watch the grand germinators... argh. I caught it from him once. Now I place a fan blowing in his direction.

Having a very hard time with this. 4 grams of sugar equals about 1 tsp. We, as a people, need to attempt to keep our daily sugar intake to about 6 tsp per day.  Has anyone paid attention to this? Right now I feel like this is never going to happen. I am addicted!

I know that one gram of fat equals 9 calories. To loose weight I usually successfully limit my fat intake to 20%. So if I am taking in 100 calories - 20 of them can be fat so that is about 2 grams.

Gee guys - thanks  for letting me bounce this off of you. I really appreciate your listening.

Check out the diet doctor and Dr fung.

Here's pictures of the chicks. All 6 hatched and were living when I last checked about 3 hours ago.

I live in MT, sometimes we get -20 in the dead of winter. I am getting baby ducks & geese in June. Trying to perfect their giant predator proof run that they will stay in when I am at work or not home (free range when I am home) I want to know if I can put wild sagebrush in their pen? Is it toxic? Will they destroy it completely? Also, I would like to add wild grass that grows in our fields. Does anyone have any helpful info on sagebrush & ducks, geese? I think it would be perfect- cold hardy, thick wood branches, little maintenance, ect. Of anyone can help, I would be very much appreciative. I cannot find any info on Google that relates with ducks & sagebrush!

Been raining here also. Almost .2", we need the rain also. It will be making for a dreary day though. So glad we have a pretty lax dress code at school. Jeans and my staff shirt today! Because that is how I feel. I have 15 chicks. 2 eggs that have not hatched and don't look like the have pipped.

I forgot to put the rain gauge out, DH will be angry. At least I didn't forget to put it away for winter and freeze it.
