Surviving Minnesota!

And some chicken pics.

ETA my sister bought a bunch of SLW the other day and I had her get me three RIR... Figured I might as well get some if they have them... There is also pics of my Bantam Cochins and my only Porcelain D'Uccle

that first one looks as if you caught her in the act LOL! Those chicks are so cute, what kind are the ones that have the fuzzy feet? Are those the Cochins? But Bantams are smaller right? I would love to add some of that color to my mixed flock! Can you imagine the mix of Blue and Buff on Cochin chicks?! wow!

Did you pick this one Holm and open the stalk?

I think that is a yellow, and you normally, I am guessing only have blacks up there.

While the cap hangs free,  most false morels I have seen are more "squishy" looking.

BTW I have a cousin near you that loves false morels, even though we have told her she is playing with fire eating them.   She posted some the other day that Judy showed me and they were all darker and squatier.

No we left them. We only have blacks up here. My moms friend picks morels every spring and she said do not eat these. They are "professional" Shroom hunters lol. They walk into the woods with grocery bags and walk out with full bags. But they wont share their spots

Next time you see one of them, just cut the stem and shroom in half lengthwise.. if it is hollow it is good. (or run back to that one)

We only have yellows down here or we thought until I found those blacks the other day..I am sure other knew about them...but people are not real willing to share the spots and what they get.

I will take a walk put there this evening. It is FULL of them. Like we have to walk across logs or we step on them. I will probably take a few pics of cutting them just so you guys can see and give your opinion...

LOL that little brat is trying to be broody! She has been making broody clucks since February and now has started walking around all puffed up! I hope she is finally sitting when I do chores this evening. I really hope she sits and stays sitting so I csn toss some eggs under her. Shes huge so I can fit quite a few eggs under her... Lots of Turkey eggs :D

I am looking for some more Blue Cochins. I think Blues and Splash are my favorite Cochin colors. After I lost my old standard hen I decided I had to get some more. They make such good moms and are really easy keepers.

I love my Cochins!! And they seem to be doing well being mommas, sharing the duties between each other! One of them got locked out of the broody cage the other night for a little while and so the other momma took all 12 under her until I got the other broody back inside. She somehow jumped straight up and knocked the mesh off the top enough for her to get out...hmmmmm. Smart little ladies I have to say...

When I went out to close everyone up, I noticed her sitting in the nest box closest to the broody cage. I opened the door and she went right back in happy to be back with the chicks!

I only got 4 true Blue Cochins in this hatch the others are Barred Rock/Cochin mixes (Barred Rock hens/Blue Cochin Roo) but I am curious about two of the chicks that came out almost all black. Wondering if there was a reverse breeding between the Cochin hens and my Barred Rock Roo (who isn't allowed to mate according to my boss roo, the Blue Cochin) I am by no means even remotely knowledgeable about breeding for colors so it is just an observation of mine...we will see the results when these two little ones feather out. The interesting thing is ALL the chicks have feathered feet! The one even has dark blue feathers on the top of his legs and grey/blue striped feathers on his feet. I hope those stay that way!!

But I would love to mix a buff color and the blue Cochin colors...wow that would be pretty! Do they breed full sized buff colored Cochins? (just talking out loud, I will have to do some research

Its a good thing the other mom kept the babies warm for her while she was gone lol!

I cant wait to see how your Barred Rock crosses turn out! I bet theyll be stunning!

I have a few Bantam Blue Cochin hens that I may toss with a Buff cockerel if I keep a buff pair. I may just keep the pullets and get rid of all the cockerels. I want to start getting away from hatching mutts and just hatch pure breeds. But we will see. I have all summer to think about it!

There are Standard Buff Cochins. I can get you contact info for some people if you ever want some. Otherwise I think Cackle or Murray McMurray might have them.

I may sell 3 of my Cochin chicks all splashes and blues. I just have to wait a bit and see how they mature. I may be coming to Hutchinson so if you came there and still were looking for some. Or I might just hatch some out for selling later this month

They look ok to me . If no wooly stuff inside they are good . I have never found a false morel . Hmmm bet your professional picks and sells a lot of them . What better way to keep others from picking them than to spread misinformation .
