Surviving Minnesota!

The doe I shot was a 2 year old that had never had a fawn. You dont get any better eating.

A bit!! You slept half the day away.

I have one of those thermometers that you read remotely. I have the "probe" part in my bird feeder to keep it out of the rain. and it has a little roof on it. It shows 12.5 degrees.

I have a large round ones on the bird feeder pole. it shows 10 degrees, but it lies to me. I never thought to check the IPhone.

I think it is great the snow stayed way south of us. I wonder if Kloppers got hit with snow.
We got fractions of an inch. Enough to make it all white here. The sun is shining so i suspect we will see dirt again today. The chickens walked out in it for a minute, decided it was not interesting and went back inside :)

EJB< we processed the turkey about 10 days ago and placed him in the freezer. It was starting to have problems walking and seemed to lay around a lot. I did not want to have him die on me and have the meat ruined. So I helped him die.

I love the heat of a wood stove, I would have a wood stove in here, but the house is too small, even though that is all it had for heat when we were kids. And more importantly I do not trust the chimney. It had 2 chimneys we took one down when we remodeled the other we lined for a gas furnace.

Wood heat is so comforting and makes lazes about so much more enjoyable. I have to go to the cabin for that now. In Togo the only heat source we have is wood.

I went in my woodshop this AM for chicken water and it was still 40 degrees in there! not sure how it is retaining THAT much heat from my 100 degree fire yesterday.

Only my Golden Comet is laying right now, so 1 out of 5, and she is only laying every 3rd day or so... the rest are molting or just slackers..

I picked 36 eggs yesterday and picked 18 this AM while doing chores. usually my girls don't mind me reaching under and taking their eggs. now that it is cold they are starting to get fussy if i try to peek! good thing I was wearing gloves :)

I like "non-gamey" venison. I think it depends on the deer, the age and what it eats. I have had corn fed deer that are great. I got a buck once near Tofte that was so bad it was not edible.

Normally venison hamburger can be fixed with wild rice in a hot dish and be great, That one could not. It unfortunately became mainly dog food.

I am not a big fan of venison chops, I do like roasts and hamburger in hot dishes, I think it makes the hot dish taste better. I am thinking I would like your Stew BC.

Any diving bird tastes bad to me, and is not worth the effort to hunt.

As a kid my Dad talked a friend and I into cleaning a couple coots. OMG He must have laughed his butt off in secret. After the second bird we stopped and threw them all away, never to shoot another coot. Minnow water would be a step up from the mud smell we got cleaning the coot.

If i end up with real gamey venison i grind it with bacon ends and pieces plus a few spices to make breakfast sausage. It is excellent. I've got the recipe around here somewhere... it is sage based and goes well with eggs

A bit!! You slept half the day away.

i was up at 8:30 (yes i call that sleeping in) but my rule is that i have to do chores before i come on here or else it gets put off.... i had to clean and fill waterers, turn my deep litter and add shavings, scoop over due poop boards and haul it all out to the garden and spread it.

From today on i will be scraping the poop boards daily. the longer you wait, the worse the job gets. and that isnt even taking the moisture issue into account!
