Surviving Minnesota!

Snowing here, too. Not too impressive in the photo, but enlarge it. It’s blowing sideways from the north at 10mph, 32 degrees. That’s the high. At least it’s not sticking as threatened... yet. It’s still really cold and wet, tho. This is the kind of weather you’ll still be talking about in ten years.

I have 32+ chicks and poults coming Friday and they’re going in big totes because the geese can’t evacuate the stock tank. I took them outside on our one warmish day last week and they still haven’t forgiven me. The brown box with the blue tarp on top and the wheelbarrow holding it down? It’s surrounded by poultry netting. That’s where they spent the day. They didn’t think the shelter was quite upscale enough, so when the wind blew they refused to go in. They just hunkered down in the grass. I don’t think they’re very smart...

Off to the right, that pup tent thing... there are 24 Rangers and 4 BBWs in there. Also 4 heat lamps. I suppose they’d be growing faster if it weren’t so cold, but they seem to be doing okay.

With the strange up and down weather my hatches have been abysmal. The last batch we're all shrink wrapped. I managed to assist several and had to bathe one it was so badly sticky and stuck. I seem to have a hen going broody though. If she's serious I'm happy to let her do the work.

Hopefully we get the garden turned over this weekend. It's been dry this week, so barring any rain, progress.

We had a shock to our community last week and I'll be going to a memorial service today, along with my kids and most of the school. A boy I knew well and watched grow up committed suicide. His younger brother is Dolly's best friend. It's going to be a hard day. I'm already emotional.

Sorry to hear this, it's so sad.

@R2elk lots of young legbars.. I just finished judging the Cream Legbar club online show.. The director from Ca and myself spent 5 hours on the phone discussing the best and reserve of the show and the divisions.. I am legbar’d out for today. I will look at Yours closer tomorrow..

And I am fighting major depression with our return to winter. We have white ground again.. I refuse to plow snow in May!!!

A
Neighbor told me he saw a Fox in the ditch in front of my place today.. that scares me. I need more traps!

Morning......there is no good preceding morning as the return of winter absolutely stinks!

On a positive note I am not my husband’s uncle. (Yesterday he went through 3 trucks trying to haul one load of calves to the sales barn.) my father in laws truck was the easiest to fix so I nicely drove 30 in the slippery slop last night to get him a new alternator and serpentine belt. Then 30 minutes back home in subpar driving conditions. After a little truck jockeying everyone should be able to get to their destinations today.

Lost a buckeye yesterday, she was perfectly healthy day before now I will check her band number she may be “grandma” so it may be age.

I am crossing my fingers I get some Toad eggs to develop into pullets. So far all males, not good for breed preservation but excellent for human consumption.
