Surviving Minnesota!

Ivie it might be worth it to watch your hens for a day. Do some linger on their eggs longer than others? . What breeds do you have? Some breeds have more tendency to broodiness than others. Cochins, silkies, australorps, orpingtons. There is also the pressure of a clutch of eggs against a hen's breast that can trigger broodiness some claim. So building a nest with 4 golf balls or ceramic eggs maybe and an extra dark nest box..? As the spring wears on and egg laying cycles tend to wane those hormones tend to come to the surface. Usually production type layers have the broody gene practically bred right out of them.

A hen sitting very flat on a nest. Not roosting at night. Lots of bick-bicking. Those are the signals you have a broody

Ahhhh thank you. So this RIR has been a little broody and I have just the right broody nest box for her. I have been keeping the two RIR separate from the other three hens and Tom because he just goes after them time and time again. They are wearing saddles now to help their poor backs heal - hopefully they will heal. Oh! but I already told you that. Dah!

Truly, I would be drinking the Mother's or Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar an some honey just to up my immune system. Especially (an I am doing this) this time of year. Energizes also. And dab it full strength on the site. Just sayin.

I dabbed some oregano oil on it. I'll drink some ACV, thanks!

I found a deer tick embedded in my skin this morning. anyone- would you wait to see if it stays red around it or go to the dr. ?  I don't know if they just give antibiotics or test anymore.

Mark the day you removed the tick on your calendar. Any fever or joint ache or weird rash even away from the bite mark in the next two weeks to a month go in. Right now they only give doxy to kids as prophylactic measure if requested by the parents. You may get a bullseye at the bite. That's normal and not indicative of the disease. Wash it well with soap and water, antibiotic ointment and band aid. And just be alert of any flu- like symptoms or rash. Dang things.

Yep I hate ticks...
At this time of year with yard work and gardening I'm always sore so that isn't a good test of symptoms.

They'll get their new feathers this fall with their first moulting. It's amazing how beautiful they are with those new feathers!

Yay for the RIR!!!

I candled the eggs under my broody last night, well I think I missed one and did one twice, but I'll check again in a couple more days. Every one looked like it had some development, some more than others. I hope that doesn't mean anything bad. It's day 8.

Morning . I see you are posting this morning . Must be rainy . Rain coming but not here yet . Sunday we were fishing for panfish . 1 crappie some bluegill and 1 channel cat were caught . I caught 1 three inch bluegill . I was using waxies and cousin using crickets . Grandson used chicken liver for catfish .

Thinkin of using Millie Fleur and barring together since I have them in bantam . Similar to the 55 Flowery . Maybe call them Prairie Flowers . What do you think ?
