Surviving Minnesota!

My friend's daughter raised roller pigeons for a while - they were really a lot of fun to watch. Enjoy!

Pics, of course!!
I will post some tomorrow!

Two for sure. I'll know about the other in a week or so. Well, take your time and think about it....don't be hasty....
Oh too bad. What are you going to do with them?

I think he is regular mille but I could be wrong. I only had 1 blue mille hen and she always laid in one corner nest box or at least I thought so. Also the guy I got them from didn't say anything about there being blue in the background of the rest but I never really asked either.
Well it seems that his wings have blue, but his tail is black.

So I don't know!

Nathan, you will enjoy the show that the rollers put on, and with your skill at producing video of flying birds you should get some nice video to show.
What type of rooster has the Maiden Rock hen been with? I have two bantams left here a Citron Spangled Maiden Rock and a Gold Campine, and both are hens. They will not be crossed with the Chanteclers.

Ralphie, there you go for a source of foo foo birds. I expect that Destiny has quality!
Thanks, I am looking forward to seeing them roll, maybe I can get that in slo mo. The chicks will be half mille fleur oegb, so obviously its going to take a little breeding. Too bad you don't have a rooster, either a Maiden Rock or Campine, both would speed up the process a bit! I would love to see pictures of your hens!

Oh, I tried letting my mama hen and her babies out with the fock. Mama and baby got pecked, and mama was still brooding I think, so I kept her locked up a few extra days till the chicks could move faster... I let them out yesterday, and all is well. Mama is defending babies just fine, being a good mama. I think she is kinda terrorizing the flock though. Lol

My chicks were about 5 weeks when I let my broody and them free range with the flock, there are a couple hens marshmallow (broody) won't stand up to but they aren't interested. There is one hen that will deliberately come over and terrorize them but she only does it once in a while and hasn't caused any wounds... Yet.

Cochin bantams make good broodies too, especially when they are from a breeder.

Klop... I'm not that far west of you and its totally overcast and a few drips so far. Supposed to rain into tomorrow... Got the lawn mowed quick and farm chores done. Cleaned up the garden a little more and most of my perennials are coming in nice. My asparagus even poked up yesterday too.

Ralphie... If you really want to get into the fufu breeds, let me know. I have tons of silkies out of the shell now and limited numbers of bantam salmon faverolles and polish (maybe even frizzled ones too). I breed only for the show ring so they are culled hard.

I am very interested in some Fufu's.. I might need you to teach me in the art of Fufu... Is it Fufu or foofoo I can never get that down pat.

Expect a pm....

Heres a few pics. Ralph I am scared of babying. He sits at my feet and coos till I scratch his bell snd crop area.

I would not be scared of it at all. Just make sure you cover his eyes now and then and bend his head down, little things roosters do not like. I only had to do it once this year with King George and he has been on his best behavior, while still being a good rooster.

Yesterday during retesting of the Turkey hens. King George was in the rhubarb patch with his hens. (one of their favorite places to forage) The hen tussled and made some noise. King George came on a dead run ready to fight. He got about 10 ft away and saw it was me and just stood and watched, he did not interfere.

It just amazes me how willing to die for their women these roosters are. The only rooster I have that I do not think would fight to the death for his hens is Blackie..Lucky's Dad, sorry Holms Lucky has a worthless father. I just wish I knew who is mother is. Brown egg is all I know.

Well, its morning again. LOL. Yesterday was a busy traveling day. Over to Sommerset to visit a cousin turning 91 and then to Bloomington to attend a funeral. Home again, home again. My dogs were happy to see me.

I am glad it is wet outside. I have alot of indoor paperwork and housework to accomplish. But of course I will be checking out SM from time-to-time.

I left two sacrifice eggs in the RIR nesting box thinking (I really dunno) that they just might sit on them. Is that possible. Tom got both hens two days ago. Comments please. Teach me - I am willing to learn. I want to have a hen hatch eggs.

I was in the coop this morning doing the usual chores when I heard this awful sound coming from the chick pen. I looked over and it didn't look like anything was wrong so I continued doing chores. Then I heard it again! This time I sat and watched them until it happened again, Hawk is learning to crow! He was 6 weeks old Saturday. His half brother hasn't crowed yet.

Hawk. Brahma Cochin cross bantam.

Congratulations if you knew he was/wanted him to be a Roo. :ya

Condolences if you didn't.:hit

I knew he was a roo since three days old (sexed him myself). He was quite ugly for a while, very slow to feather in. Now he is getting handsome. We will have to give him away (anyone want him?) because we already have a roo and I plan on keeping a barred Cochin bantam roo from one of the chicks shipping tomorrow. I think three roosters is too many.

Are either hen broody now?

If not just pull the eggs and store them in cool place 60ish until they go broody. I would load the nest with fake eggs and change them when they are broody. Leaving them there is a good way to get rotten eggs...

And then I am doing it myself right now too,,SO Do as I say not as I do... I have not been getting any Minnesota Australorp eggs for almost a week. I have a small "coop" off that run and I mean small. Holm saw it he can tell you how small. The other day I thought to myself... " self, do you think she could be laying eggs in that old nest/coop?"

I checked and she had a half a dozen eggs in there. So I decided to let her keep laying there. I expect her to go broody any day now. Because she is an Australorp she will most likely go hard broody. So ignore what I said...lol

Grats on his first crow... Holm video Lucky's first crow, now that he has runaway from home, I will miss all those precious little moments myself, so video is all I will have to remember him by.....
