Surviving Minnesota!

Good morning everybody!

Dixie is a determined little broody. And I feel bad that I'm taking eggs away from her. She sits in the nest that everyone likes to use. She keeps the eggs covered that every one leaves until I come collecting. Her being broody and covering the eggs seems to have kept the Labrador off egg stealing. So.... I cracked open a BLRW egg to check fertility from my old man Roger. NH over BLRW would be pretty wouldn't it? The old man is getting the job done the blastoderm was there on the yolk. Give Dixie two eggs to tend to to satisfy her mommy urges...?

We drug the broody coop out of the woods into the run. I need to sweep it out. Get a beer flat full of pine shavings and new mint sprouts and set Dixie's buff broody buns with a couple of huevos.

I can't wait until one of my girls goes broody on me! I am ready!

I found a deer tick embedded in my skin this morning. anyone- would you wait to see if it stays red around it or go to the dr. ? I don't know if they just give antibiotics or test anymore.

One of my sons came down with the bullseye rash last year. I photographed its progression during the time between the doctor visit and the call I made for the appointment, to get a positive diagnosis. A lot of people have trouble getting a Lyme's diagnosis, and have to do the runaround if flareups present as other conditions, so I wanted that diagnosis on his record and she agreed. He was given antibiotics. We don't even remember pulling a tick off of him, the center of it was on his back, on a shoulder blade. I would go in to be sure, and I avoid doctors for most things, simply because if they can get a diagnosis on your record it makes future treatments much more streamlined when there is a flareup. Without the presence of the rash, I'd ask to be tested. You don't necessarily need to get that bullseye to contract Lyme's. I feel like I should assume all of us have it! We've all pulled a tick off from time to time. I hope things go well for you. :)

Morning . I see you are posting this morning . Must be rainy . Rain coming but not here yet . Sunday we were fishing for panfish . 1 crappie some bluegill and 1 channel cat were caught . I caught 1 three inch bluegill . I was using waxies and cousin using crickets . Grandson used chicken liver for catfish .

Thinkin of using Millie Fleur and barring together since I have them in bantam . Similar to the 55 Flowery . Maybe call them Prairie Flowers . What do you think ?

Need pictures of Maiden Rocks .

Yes, very rainy this morning! I was also amused at the number of postings on a rainy day.

Nice haul of fish with the grandson!

I didn't tag the photos you posted, but if those are your "barnyard mixes", you are doing it right! Very nice looking birds. I would be interested in seeing a mille fleur x barred cross. I like the name, too.

Just a heads up on general woodticks--if you folks don't know this--but they carry anaplasmosis or erlichia. So if you get a woodtick that's been on a bit...watch for symptoms of that as well.

the bullseye rash around the bite is erythema migracans. Showy name for receding redness brought on by the tick's spittle to thin the blood. Some ticks have Lyme disease some don't. I would say most around here do though unfortunately. But because of this chance that they might not and overuse of antibiotics...Depending on your Dr. and regional medicine practices a lot of Dr.'s take the lets wait for other symptoms approach. Our Dr.'s in our town ask if you've been working outside. And you get the antibiotic, pretty much. Im not sure they hardly test any more because it is so prevelant here.

But a month from now it might be a good indication erlibird. Plus if you are sore and nausea - that would be alittle odd. I need to start using my calendar more for tracking these things. I am just too fuzzy to remember these types of things anymore. Thanks Bogtown.

Yes you are right, I'll mark the calendar. I often think I'll remember something but don't and wish I'd have written it down.

Thank you both-

My DH had anaplasmosis couple years ago, he had the symptoms so they didn't test just gave the doxy.

I have also heard that they don't test often because the high rate of false negatives. I think ralphie may have even mentioned that the other day. I picked a tick of my pooch this weekend which means I waited to long to start flea and tick meds. this warm snap has brought on a miraid of bugs. my flock has been coming in from ranging with full crops the last few days. they have much less interest in dinner and there is leftovers still in the feeder when I open coops in the morning. it is nice to see them finding good things to eat! they are good at keeping the ticks down around the house where they range but we hike all over the countryside with our pups and they are always running through deep grass and brush.

fortunately DW and I have rarely had issues with ticks on ourselves

I have a love-hate relationship with the phone app. It is nice that, between the phone and computer, they remember where I last left a thread. But most of my photos are on my phone, and the phone app won't let me upload them for some reason. I can work around it, though.

I was able to see your pictures, but I was too lazy to "quote" your pictures. :) I just followed your facebook page, too.

@holm25 Nice looking rooster.....It appears to be a barred rock?

Question for all you chicken experts: My 9 year old son has his first ever flock of barred rock that he intends to show for 4H. For some reason he was given an extra rooster...one rooster is runtly and visibly smaller than the hens and visibly smaller than the other rooster. He is eating and drinking fine, just not gaining weight. Should we consider giving him a little home of his own for a while or let him run with the flock yet. (They are only 1 week old)

THanks for the advice!
