OK Fellow Minnesotan's - I am a newbie to the Hen House. Here is the scoop.....Mom wants hens for laying, 2 kids want 4H showing hens. (Ages 9 & 11) We are looking to embark on this adventure this sping.....what recommendations do you have for breeds as well as tips and tricks for the cold central MN winters. Looking for a flock of 20-30 initially the Hen House 12X18 foot with 8 foot side walls. Recommendations (on everything) PLEASE!

Howdy!! Welcome!!

Are you buying from breeders or hatcheries? Are there certain egg colors you are looking for? Someone @Cluckies I think has a fantastic post on wintering birds here in MN. And great info on what to keep in your first aid kit for poultry. Maybe she will chime in soon and repost it for us. :)

You will find that we encourage you to get many birds of all kinds. We are enablers here!! I am still learning the ways of chickening in winter as this is only my second but I can tell you ventilation is key!!! I know I am not much help but there are many here that have been doing this for many years and have lots of good advice. If you have a question ask it. There are no dumb questions!!

Welcome MNchickmom!! I think Rhetts asked all the good questions! She warned you about us being enablers but I especially am a horrible enabler... Only one of them have decided to get ducks through my enabling though... Any ways welcome!

Oh and where in MN are u?

MnChickMom, I would suggest that you make it easy on yourself. Chickens with a calm temperament and a small comb to avoid winter frost damage. You should seriously consider Buckeyes and Chanteclers. If you want dark brown eggs then Marans, and for blue eggs Ameraucanas. EE hens are likely to have mixed traits and temperaments.

Ralphie I could help you with the CL diversity . A improved cockerel perhaps ? Just put eggs in the hatch tray for monday or tuesday hatch . Some from the CL/Leghorn cockerel in there . First trip up in late June .

I would offer oyster shells to them..

Just in case..

For 39 degrees it is cold out there! The south wind is chilly!
