Just saying....80 and sunny south of the Mason Dixon.

COFFEE...we are waiting for a turkey update over on the turkey talk forum! :D

My maiden rock hen is sitting on 6 growing eggs! I had no idea candling was SO easy! I figured I'd have to strain my eyes to see a trace of anything but it was pretty obvious who was growing and who wasn't. Also my goose Elizabeth starting brooding yesterday, so I really hope those eggs are fertile and are healthy! I wish goose eggs didn't take so long though, its going to be lonely without her walking around.

Anybody know how long you are supposed to wait to candle a goose egg?

My chickens appear to be happy with the texture of my ground corn. I have 1 50lb bag of layer ration left and i will use it to transition the birds to the new feed by offering both feeds together. Yesterday i fed them their usual ration and then put a mixture of corn and oats from my grinding video in a side dish. both flocks ate them up no problem! Today i need to work out how i am going to mix the feed as pouring back and forth between buckets is a chore. i have a few 35 gallon barrels and i think i will use one. i just need to work out a way to add a closable lid to the top so i can fill it, tip it over, then roll it around to mix. i have an idea in my head, just need to get it more tangible. I currently pay $11.49 for 50lbs of layer feed, my mixture will run about $6.35 per 50lbs. cant argue with that!

Other than that.... the chickens are out and enjoying the sun, grass is growing and i wouldnt be surprised if DW is mowing with in a week (she loves to mow!)

One thing I have done if I'm just doing a 50/50 mix (BOSS and whole oats are a favorite of everybody, rabbits, chickens, sheep), is I dump both bags or two buckets of each grain in simultaneously. Is that making sense? You can do it with a buddy or do it yourself, but it's probably the easiest way I've found to mix large batches of feed, like the amount you'd store in a lidded trash can. It is then really easy to sort of mix with the scoop as you add to that day's feed bucket.
No matter how much longer it takes me to do chores when my cousins come with me, it's always priceless to see moments like these.

Very sweet!

That is a bummer, sorry...  at least she died happy in your arms..

Why are birds so mean to each other?    Can't they all just get along!

The purple comb is a dead giveaway on a heart problem. MY last CX has that same problem. She does not have long for the world. SHe has stopped laying eggs, but Bert has her all beat up, so that might be it too.

I should have had Holm demonstrate his AI skills with Bert today.

Thanks Ralphie

Alright. It is like 47 or 50 degrees outside and overcast. We lost our "nicer" weather. I think the lawns and woods needed the rain we got last night though. Ditches are greener than ever and the lawn is greening as well.
