Surviving Minnesota!

I love seeing your baby pictures, Holm. Every time we drive by a pasture with calves and their mamas, I tell DH, "I wish I could just go grab one of those babies and bring it home!" And DH laughs and says, "You could try..."
You could try but I don’t think those momma cows would let you get far! Maybe you can convince your husband to get you a few? Lol

"Spring"? What is this "spring" of which you speak?

It's a very distant memory I guess. For some reason my heated water for the coop is not heating. I thought maybe it was due to the power being out for a little while yesterday but it still hasn't thawed and the power has been back for almost 24 hours. I feel like i shouldn't have to worry about frozen water in April. :/

Amen Sista! I too was chiseling water this morning and I had a burnt out heat lamp in a brooder.

I saw a cute Meme on Facebook.....Trump fixed global warming in just 2 years! :celebrate

You could Bobbi if you had some good running shoes.

When I was 6 or 7 dad brought a calf over from the Momma for me to pet. She proceeded to chase me until dad kicked her. But I recall telling dad, "I think I got away Dad because I had my fast running shoes on." :wee:rolleyes::gig

Okay Funny. I just googled them.

You could outrun that heifer in these Bobbi, I'm sure of it! :lau

Stringbean. I've been thinking and thinking of things that Ralphie, Ed, Jerry have all taught me that there is a risk in nursing back the weak ones. In that you now have a responsibility to not propel her genetics. That's the tricky part of animal husbandry. It's a responsibility and to be good at what you do. But I love little chicks and perhaps its just the incubator issue. And I think if they are just pets she deserves a chance. Just wanted to put that out there.

I hear ya. I had to bring the hose in to thaw before I could water horses yesterday. I didn't drain it the last time because it was the END OF MARCH! I shouldn't have to drain or thaw hoses at the end of March or beginning of April!

I'll have to look into getting some Buster Browns just for calf grabbing! (Actually, I have had both hips replaced, and my surgeon says no more running, so I guess that's out...)

:gigAhhh shooot. Funny Bobbi. They were so comfortable, I remember.

I hope the hips are keeping you mobile though...
I'm starting to feel mine. But I think its from stretching my leg under my desk chair and crossing my ankle. It pulls the hip tendon. I ate Ibuprofen for a year until my chiropractor told me to 'pay attention to what I was doing'.

I have to agree with Bogtown here.....if they are merely pets....just watch so she doesn't get trampled, or "brought down" by predator or disease. If you intend to breed from her (him) I would consider putting it down. It is the most difficult decision to make, but ultimately you know what you want from your flock.

We just put down a 4 day old chick last night that dislocated it's hock joint. (How the heck that happened is beyond me but it was a terrible dislocation and he was clearly suffering.)

I was impressed that my 13 year old daughter stepped up and said, "Mom, I will put this one down...but can you make sure I do it correctly and quickly." We use the put them to sleep with ether method as well. She did it all by herself and I was proud of her. - Chalk one up for the animal ethics class she took.
