Survivor: tale of crushed hatchling

Following the story of our Survivor.

Backstory, Mama Noisy Girl went broody and we got her some Easter Egger eggs, yay!

Thursday, March 14, we had some severe weather, and when I got home from work, I checked on eggs and noticed one had been crushed. I could hear a cheep, and honestly didn't have the heart to toss it. I placed it back under Mama and hoped for the best.

Obviously within a crushed egg it's not gonna hatch on it's own. I did break shell near beak, gave it time, and slowly helped it out.

The other four chicks hatched on Friday, so I sort of went with them on the Survivor. I figured, what happens happens.

Later Friday, it was moving, and one slower hatchmate, the grey one was moving like it, so I thought okay we'll see.

Saturday I checked on them often, I didn't want this brood to be feral like Mama's last brood lol!
The Survivor was moving, slowly, but checked it over, and didn't notice any broken bones or disfigured. So far so good.

This morning, Sunday, decided to offer egg yolk and wet mash- for Mama, Survivor and siblings. Had to touch its beak to my finger for the yolk, and it finally ate some. Then with the mash, I had to bob its head in it, and it drank/ate some, even with Mama clucking and looking at it funny.

It's still wobbly and stays still more than not, but time will tell, and I'll update this adventure as we go.

Alright! Got the little one to eat on its own! Still a little wobbly and off kelter, but it's wanting to eat! Kept going for more, even with pushy sibling lol

(If I say "he" or "her" I feel it will determine the sex and while I'd like hers, if I say her, it'll be a him lol)

Monday and Mama moved them out of nest box to next to it lol I saw Survivor trundling around on the camera, so YAY!

Got home and offered Mama some hand food (she has access to food and water). Four came right out to Mama clucking, Survivor didn't, and I scooped it out to check on it.

Cheeped, eat, wobbled over to the water and drank. Legs look okay, no splayed, and obviously it is smaller than others, so maybe it wasn't quite ready to hatch and will just be smaller until it picks up.

Did fix mash with egg, crushed super B vitamin and a 1/4tsp probiotics, it likes to drink it more than eat it.

So far so good!

Wow! She![He!] IS a survivor!!! Please keep us posted.
I hv eggs in incubator..after our rooster/hen loss[ 3/11] trying to hatch some of their offspring..they were fantastic..yes great eggs and eating tics ect..but they were truly our pets..so hoping we can hatch a few so their legacy lives on!

So we have a cockerel left from Mama's last batch and he was trying to attack Mama through fence- he is now in a dog pen...

While we were out there our son(15) saw Survivor roll out from under Mama and wanted to help and got it all squared away! Survivor ate a bit of the mushy mash and then tucked back up under Mama!

Phew! I think Survivor is gonna make it! I will update progress reports, but so far so good!

(And I just love chicks out of Mama's wings lol)
