Sussex, Barnevelders, Silkies... My Breeding Thread.

Not sure yet. I need to try and remind myself who his parents are 😭 He's the best choice to put with the showgirls looking at NN genetics but colourwise they're only black and I want the colour...
Unless he is actually Blue/splash then the blacks may be a good choice.

A thread for me to post pictures, other random thoughts and updates on my breeding projects.

I currently keep Buff Sussex, Barnevelders (Gold and Silver), silkies and showgirls in various colours.

I'll start with the Sussex and add the others in seperate posts. All recent pictures show chickens in the middle of really heavy moults 😬
I'll also add names moreso to help me keep track 🤣
SOPs is the unofficial goal. I just want to preserve this fairly uncommon variety, with quailty preferably. I purchased some outcrosses and was extremely disappointed in them and finally decided to sell them as I won't be breeding from them.
I have showed a couple times and may again later this year.

Currently I have one older rooster (Thor). He's gotta be at least 6 by now but I'm not sure. I'm no longer using him for breeding but he's the father to quite a few of my hens so I'll still add him in :)

My other rooster is Rodney. I don't intend to breed from him anymore but still have him around because it will take awhile to find a new breeding rooster. And if anything was to happen to some of my hens in the meantime I should be able to hatch some more...

One hen, hatched mid to late 2022 (Squash)
Older photo as she is moulting really bad. Ignore the frizzle 😂

Three hens hatched late 2022, (only Nosey is named currently...). Father is Thor, mother was my hen I lost in December, Spices.

Glorious birds!
Can.not.ignore.that.frizzle - WOW that's a pretty one

Technically, both. Here in Aus there is a Frizzle breed. I am stilling trying to figure out what exactly it is though...
And Frizzle is also the feather mutation. Several breeds have Frizzle as an accepted variety such as Polish, cochin/pekin and Japanese bantams.
Here in the US, frizzle is accepted in all breeds. You could exhibit a frizzle Old English Game, if you really wanted.

You have lovely birds, Clouds!

I think you could here depending on the show. I believe you can show developmental varieties in the correct places. Like I cannot remember if Showgirls are accepted in the SOPs, but I think I can still exhibit them if I wanted to?
The entire reason for me getting Barnvevelders again was to develop a frizzled variety. I just dont actually have the resources for that rn! And I'm focusing alot on my silkies for now...

Thank you, I'm been thinking about getting back to breeding soon. I've just been so busy and I still have an over abundance of silkie cockerels taking up space 😅

That would be weird tho

If you did create them, black frizzles would be the logical starting point imo. But I get the lack of space.

You can exhibit any breed or non-breed at a show, as long as you pay for the cage they're happy to set it up for you. XD

Aren't there frizzled Seramas? 🤣

I will keep that in mind! I did once come across frizzled "wyandottes" though they didn't really look much like wyandotte...

Good to know. I think I've showed less than 10 times in my whole life I think 😅
