Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I'd be getting plenty of SFH eggs now if the hogs would stop getting out and heading straight to the coop to eat the eggs and clean their feeders.

Local slaughter house had to push our date back to March 18, because they got horribly backed up with the nasty weather we had here. Haven't had much luck locating anyone else in my area. UGH. I have processed hogs before -- I worked in a slaughterhouse during college -- but I was young and had the proper equipment. But they are making me mad eating the eggs!
I hear that. We had to do a 1,000 hog as an emergency one time (bear ran it out of pen, DH had broken ribs, she was heading for the road at 10pm) that was one very long night & day! On the other hand, loosing all the eggs until Mar 18, ?& poss other things like garden, chickens, etc. that is a difficult choice... Hope it all works out for you.

I'm calling two places a couple hours away tomorrow...I don't want to keep them any longer than I have to! They ran through the neighbor's yard today. I'm going to tweak the electric fence again and see why it isn't keeping them in. I have feed for 12 more days, but if they go somewhere before it's gone, I'll give it to the chickens as a treat, like scratch...my Swedes run as fast as they can to the pig pen when I cut them loose in the mornings to clean up the spilled feed and hang out with the pigs all day. They love it.

Got my fav SFH roo to "pose" for what I think is a really pretty pic. Had to show it off!
WOW, yes handsome Roo & Great photo, enter a contest w/ it type photo.
And it sure would help if we could get more pictures like that to match up w/ all those great cartoon drawings of the various feather patterns! Having the drawings that have been posted here on this thread lately is helping me get my mind around the feathering patters, having both the simplified drawings plus real well posed pictures like this to cross reference would be amazing...

thanks for the compliment. I agree that a bunch of "real life" pics like this would be helpful for a lot of people. I wanted to add something to the picture taking session. After he was up there a min, he realized what a great place he was in and began crowing! lol There was a recent discussion about what kind of camera to get. This was taken just with my iphone camera. It is a bit darker than might otherwise be with a really good camera but still not bad at all.

ROFL i'm sitting here thinking "cartoon drawings? wth?" then looked at the pics and you're talking about the ones *I* posted LOL

but if you take this rooster and replace most (not all) fo the whiteish areas with blue or black, you end up with something along the lines of this...

the splash does minimize some red expression on the hackle and saddle somewhat.

I think this was Gunnar, wasn't it Leigh? (fwiw, I like Mace better... i'm a sucker for big breasted roosters LOL)

LOL - no, that's Mr. Mace. Must just be the way he's standing.

And for comparison - his dad, Gunnar.

Oh - and example of Blur based mille fleur:
looked pretty in focus to me.

and I still like Mace better than Gunnar...

I CAN say his brother is finally doing his "job" tho. but my mille girl's got a sprained ankle or something, she's been limping the last few days and hanging out in the nest to avoid his attentions.
