SWOLLEN EYE? my hen needs some help (PICS)

I want to give you an update on my hen. Poor girl, she was separated from her flock-mates for a few weeks there, getting all sorts of treatment from saline flushes, terramycin ointment, antibiotic in her water, squeezing out matter, and then finally the package from Poultryman arrived with the 1 Eye 1 Drop 1 Time medication.

There were no instructions included, so I just gave her 1 drop in the eye each day. The infection seemed to have gone so deep. But after 2-3 days with those drops the yellow infected matter seemed to go away. The eye still doesn't look normal, it's still cloudy & may never heal back to the way it once was.

But she started to lay eggs again, and I went ahead & put her back with her flock. It took a few days of hazing, but she's finally being accepted, and accepting of being there & not in her separate cage.

I can't help but wonder if her eye could have healed better if I'd had that medication sooner. Even though I ordered extra items to make my total over $50 & receive free shipping, Poultryman sent my package parcel post and it took almost 2 weeks to arrive. They also sent an item that was visably aged & dirty and over 2 years past its expiration date! They offered no apology for this but said they'd send a replacement, I guess it's also coming parcel post, it's been almost 2 weeks and it hasn't arrived.

I think the 1 Eye 1 Drop 1 Time medication is a good thing to have on hand for eye injuries/infections, I'll be interested to see if it's more affective if applied immediately. But I don't think I'll order it from Poultryman again.

I found this thread when doing a search to find out about my own's hen's eye. I have a bantam, (seabright), who I treated several months ago for corzya. One of her eyes always seemed somewhat swollen to me, but she seemed to get around just fine. Yesterday, she was pecking near me in my garden and I decided to have a good look at it, as it seemed bigger than before. After considerable effort of pushing and wiping with a cloth, I removed a huge piece of rubbery yellow material. Probably 1/2 inch in circumference, and all in one piece. I could not believe all of this was inside this tiny chickens eye socket. I wonder if this is an inflammatory response from the corzya infection, some sort of granuloma? All of the information on this thread, yet no specific diagnosis. Anyone?

I still don't know what the medical terms are for what I've found, nor the specific causes. It would be great to have someone knowledgeable comment here. My amatuer guess is that the gunk in the eye is somehow related to infection in the sinuses.

Recently I had a hen with nasal discharge and a weepy eye. I kept her separate and gave her my favorite remedy for respiratory ailments, injections of Tylan-50. She got better but still had issues with her eye. It took several attempts on different days, but I finally got a big ball of rubbery gunk to come out from behind/beside her eye.

It's both extremely gross and profoundly rewarding at the same time, to have helped your chicken in such a dramatic way.

Well, I am going to jump in here too.. I have a Lav Orp hen that is about 8 months old. Her left eye has been kind of weepy and puffy for several weeks. It hasn't been terrible, just looked irritated. SO.. I picked her up tonight and there is considerable swelling at the front of the eye. I pushed and the third eye lid came over and it looks enlarged and is a bit hard looking. Is this what you guys noticed before you pushed out the solid piece? I want to be sure before I start pushing on her eye :( Thank you!

Ok well, I am not very patient.

The "chunk" in her eye

The "chunk" out of her eye

Overall, it wasn't too hard to get out BUT since I had never done this before I was probably more careful than I needed to be since I didn't want to hurt her. I am going to put these on a new thread to see if we can get a diagnosis. Very odd that this was my hen's left eye as well

This is the same type of gunk I got out of my silkie's eye. I use a warm compress and wash the eye to unstick the eyelids (They glue together with the clear discharge as it dries). When I can open the eye, I can press against her face and the discharge comes out. It is usually clear, kind of thick, but if it has been closed for a couple of days, it has the cheesy, white mass. I have had this come up several times over the past 6 months. It originally happened when she got a piece of hay in her eye. Still don't know if it was an eye injury or if the hay stuck to the eye gunk. I've treated it with tetracyclin ointment, ACV in the water, washing the eye out. It gets better, then comes back. I am trying Duramycin-10 in her drinking water. Since I originally thought it was an eye injury, I didn't quarantine her. She is in my spare bathroom tub right now, so I can monitor her intake of the D-10. She is snuffly now, so I've been following this thread with great interest. She has had this issue for months, and no one else - I have seven in the bantam pen - has shown any symptoms. It just keeps coming back in Betty. I'll let you know if the D-10 works.

I really don't believe my hen had eye worm unfortunately. Her's was some type of other infection. What I removed was exclusively pus and I did not locate any type of a worm in there. She ended up dying within a week of this so I really believe she had some type of illness. :(

A lot of people have asked about eye worm / wormeye. This is it!

The youtube video does not show the removal of eyeworm(s)....only the infection caused by the bird most likely from scratching its eye causing an infection, and eyeworms can cause scratching due to irritation to the eye. It's the infection that you see that are being removed. An injury or respiratory disease can cause the infection as well. Here are pics of eyeworms: Click the link for another pic. Treatment is mixing equal parts of water and valbazen, then flushing the eye to kill the eyeworms. Then dosing the bird 1/2cc orally undiluted. Repeat this procedure in 10 days.
