Out in the run earlier, I noticed that one of the hens has a swollen, purple and red mass just below her ear. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? Some sort of gland that is abscessed?

I have the same problem (sorry cant put photos on) If anyone can suggest what this is that would be great (would like solution ASAP)

I think that your chicken may have an ear infection. Those can be caused from mites or even a respiratory infection. The swelling looks pretty significant, so I would try to get a vet to see her. If you can't she needs some antibiotics like clavamox or amoxicillin, or a sulfa drug like SMZ-TMP (bactrim). You can try cleaning out the ear with hydrogen peroxide and Q-Tips if you can get inside there, but there may be too much swelling. Does she have any respiratory symptoms such as watery eyes, nasal drainage, or rattles/wheezes?
