Texas

Hey everyone! I haven't posted to this thread in a couple days, but it looks like loads of things are happening.

For one, my previous employer finally got in contact with me and I think I'm finally going to get paid that last $186 for my work. I've been waiting for months, so I'm really glad this crap is coming to an end. I also got a job yesterday, so I'll be getting two paychecks soon, hehe!

Secondly, my "feminist" thread seems to be going well. We seem to be having a good conversation without tearing each other's heads off, so I call it a success.

And lastly, I have a predicament. I've been trying to figure out how to turn a dog kennel into a quail tractor. Last night, I had a dream that my tiny coturnix quail flew away and when I dropped food for them, they descended from the trees. But they were huge, 2 lb monster-sizes quail swooping for food and it was frightening, haha! Anyone got any idea how to turn a cage into a tractor?

I used to live in Katy! We moved up to Conroe about a year ago.

It's muggy and gross here, too. At least the rain is supposed to bring a cold front and clear skies behind it!

Where did you live in Katy? I'm off i10 and west green north. I just got my hens on oct 10th so I'm very new to the whole chicken thing. I've only got two right now and so far my neighbors have been great! These girls are so very funny. I'd like to get two more but I've got to get the fly situation under control.

I'm choosing birds that are less flighty, but also plan to clip one wing so they can't fly away over my fence. I was told to get bigger bodied birds since they can't fly as well. What hens do you have?

Oh haha I meant flies! As in the nasty flies that fly around and get into my house! I hate them. I have a Plymouth barred rock (Ethel ) and a leg horn (Lucy). I haven't gotten any eggs yet but they are getting so big. I've got a coop that will hold two more but the flies have got to go. I'm going to see if I can get some DE this weekend.

I am new here.  I am north of Dallas.  I don't have my chickens yet, hoping for next year.  I need to learn more and get things ready.

Welcome to the Tx thread, and to the great State of Texas!

I'm just north of San Antonio in the Hill Country.  Our mayor wrote a delightful editorial piece on how bicyclists were endangering cars.  He was furious he couldn't pass them safely, felt they had no business interfering with motor vehicles so ended up yelling and screaming at them when they complained to him he had passed them very unsafely.  People forget that a bicycle is a vehicle and has a right to use the road.  I haven't been on my bicycle since my head injury in a car accident in January.  I haven't had good balance up until very recently, but I think I do now.  I'm looking forward to starting riding again, but am really afraid with all the anti-cycling sentiment.  My crazy husband feels the safest way to bike into work is down Hwy 281.  He claims it has a huge shoulder and people don't text while driving on a big highway, unlike on smaller roads.  He might have a point except a month or so ago some idiot in an SUV swerved off the road and hit him on the far right of the shoulder at about 65 mph.  Miraculously, his bike stayed upright and he only had ripped shorts, lots of bruising and scrapes.  It was so incredible, that the whole highway stopped to see if he was okay.  The idiot just took off--what is it about this place with so many hit and runs?????!!!  The witnesses took cell phone pictures of the car and texted them to 911, so the police  had a photo of the front of the car and the driver before they even arrived.  Haven't heard anything from the police--just incredibly thankful that he so narrowly escaped becoming road kill.  Yes, he still rides to work.

What a blessing that he escaped further harm! He must be a brave and stubborn man to still ride his bike along the same rd.

Oh! lol! My bad. :)

I hadn't thought about flies. Are they bad when you have chickens?
