Texas

Oh!  lol!  My bad. :)

I hadn't thought about flies.  Are they bad when you have chickens?

We'll I can't speak for everyone else but I've had rabbits in my backyard for years. Now I have 6 and no flies. I got my hens on oct 10 and within a week the flies were in my house just coming through the open door as we'd go in and out. The flies around the coop are horrible. I just live in an average neighborhood with an average sized yard. I've read that DE will help control the smell and flies. I'll try it but I have not had a problem with the smell just the flies.

Morning Lisa, little chilly here too; sleep was great ... until someone called/texted me at 5:30... and I woke up early today. Ready to go to work a little early.

GOOD MORNING TEXANS!!

A little bit nippy out there!

Have a great day!

Lisa :)
Good morning.

Where did you live in Katy? I'm off i10 and west green north. I just got my hens on oct 10th so I'm very new to the whole chicken thing. I've only got two right now and so far my neighbors have been great! These girls are so very funny. I'd like to get two more but I've got to get the fly situation under control.

We lived in that weird Katy/Cypress no-man's-land up close to 290 and hwy 6. A lot of our neighbors had chickens there. I liked hearing the roosters crow in the mornings, and every once in a while a hen would escape and run around the neighborhood.

I just started with chickens, too, now that we live somewhere that we can spit without hitting a neighbor's house. I have 24, hatched October 2nd. They're going in their coop this weekend, thank goodness! They've been making a dusty mess of my guest bedroom!

Do you use sand of pine shavings. I've read about using sand and cleaning it out with cat litter pooper scooper daily. I am planing on doing that. I have a slight need for things being clean. Not full blown OCD though. ;)

I had the same problem with the flies before. I was shock 1 day to see that many flies on my window. If flies get to your home, keep the chicken cages further away from the house.

It's 35* in North Texas. Very chilly! I had to turn on the heat. Will be turning it off soon though. It is going to be a lovely day. :)

I had read where rosemary oil deters mosquitos so I took vetrx and added about 2tbls to a spray bottle of water and sprayed down the hole inside of my coops and the chickens...not only does it work but it got rid of those flies...now I spray down the trash cans too...
I had been studying on controlling the mosquitos because I don't want anything to do with the horrible fowl pox...
when you spray the chickens you don't even have to catch them just mist over them
big plus!! it smells great

I've been so lucky....I've had chicks off and on for over 15 years and beside loosing a few after hatching I've only ever lost chickens to raccoons or old age!!! nutrition and cleanliness!!
hope I didn't just jinx my flock!!
