Hello from Liberty Hill.Have fun with your chickens. They can bring such peace. And then there are the roosters. I don't know really I have never had any roosters. I like the peace of my backyard hens. No roosters needed.
you know a lot of people say that but I gatta side with the roosters I love to be sitting on my porch in the morning drinking coffee in my rocking chair and hear king George(my rooster) let out a crow.reminds me where I live and how much I enjoy the freedom and tranquility of the country... So I say crow your little hearts out to all the neighboring roosters sounds better than traffic or police sirens.and that ends my rant for the day ;)

Like I said I have never had roosters. I can't have them where I live now. I remember we had them when I was a kid.

So, it's been so nice not worrying about being attacked by roosters (got rid of the two that did) & I just bragged the other day about my two Lav Orp roos getting along in the same pen.

I go in this morning to feed & the smaller of the Lav roos wants to come at me. I firmly (not hard) used my foot to toss him back a few feet (not a kick), & he did it again. We did that dance a couple more times. I fed & got the egg, & on my way out the other roo wanted in. He got moved back a few feet as well. I stepped toward them to make sure they got the message & were done. A few minutes later I see them scuffle between themselves a little. Guess I may need to come up with another pen. :/

On the other hand, I love getting clean, shiny Maran eggs :)

I too love to hear my roosters in the morning!

There are other roosters in my neighborhood the cool thing about it is that I know mine just like when my dog barks. So I know when something has upset the coop because my roosters unique crow said so.

I have 2 roos
Beannie is a brown coffee looking bantam game I think
Hairy is a black silkie who needed a home.
they are not learning to like each other, but they are learning to work together!

As far as safety goes ... They alert me of trouble where the hens are quiet about trouble. However a lady can stand up for herself and I have seen Brady (new Jersey hen full size not giant) she is the queen of my coop, I have seen her beat up more than one stray cat in the yard for getting too close to her ladies!

Hello Texas! I live outside of Amarillo, but I spend a lot of time at my daughter's in Canyon Lake Tx.She and my grand daughter started raising 6 chickens. I love them they are so much fun to take care of. I am trying to build them a coop. This site has so much information on all aspects of that and raising chickens.Thank-you to everyone!!!

welcome!

It's funny. I remember my first batch of chicks - 14 of 'em - and they stayed in this brooder until they were 6 weeks old and it never looked so small. These guys are just over 2 weeks and I'm already thinking of finding them something bigger! I chickened out on just dirt, and added a light layer of shavings on the top, but next time, I will just do the dirt. The smell is already so much better and it gives the chicks more to play in.
