Texas

Just curious in the dreadful Tx heat and cold, how are y'all keeping your chickens nice and cozy? I'm building a coop ATM for some orpingtons and I'm trying to get inspired and plan ahead so ill do it just right.

I have fans and a mister hose. And my coop is under a bunch of oak trees.

GOOD MORNING FELLOW TEXANS!!

70 degrees this morning and I think it is still overcast.

Have a great day!

Lisa :)

Morning!

Make sure your coop has a good roof. If possible, keep the coops in shaded area, or at least away from afternoon sun. I built mine with lots of open air, for summer. In the winter, I wrap nylon sheet to block the rain and north wind. I start the wrapping process in Nov, and remove them in March.

I have a question......A person on FB had some concerns with me using the Red Plastic coffee containers as waterers..........ie: red dye, chemicals in plastic itself.......Its not too hot right now, but this next summer.....Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks ahead of time!

If the recycling # is anything but a 1 or 2 I wouldn't use any plastic for watering either for the above mentioned reasons :)

Actually #s 2 & 5 are probably best for reuse.

#1 is marginal but apparently difficult to sanitize/decontaminate for reuse and maybe shouldn't be heated (don't dishwasher #1 or leave it in a hot car).

I don't know why I mentioned #1 :smack I guess I was thinking those #'s because thats the only one's my little town accepts for recycling. I'm trying to get away from all plastic

Milk container is great for making waterer. I cut large hole for adult; cut small opening strip at the lower half for chicks. The handle is great to hook up with a string or a wire to help them stand up in the coops.

My coffee can has 2 in the little triangle......so that should be ok? If the higher number is the better to use.....any household items that you know of that use the "good" plastic? GOOD PLASTIC...oxymoron I think ;)

WOW I thought I had my watering system thought out -- I don't even have a coop yet - too much of a planner I guess.
I'm going with water safe 15 gal plastic drum plumbed through pvc to the area I've decided on ad use nipples for the chickens.
I got the idea from BYC , looked good.
