What part of East Texas? :)

My lone, surprise Maran has been named Sadie, and is quite clingy now that her sisters are gone.
I don't mind though.

She gets up there every evening, all by herself!

Good day all
Slow start today...welcome to all the new folks

Showbarn momma...sorry for the loss of your favorite hen! But glad you got the coon...we have been on a coon watch for a few nights now. I feed our outdoor cats on my porch and Thursday night my dog was making a ruckus...looked out to find a coon eating the cat food. DH went on a hunt but lost it when it ran under the house. Haven't seen it again but dirty foot prints and cat food scattered about so it's still around. He's killed 4 possum and one coon already this year.

Starfire...glad to hear your clan is doing well. Congrates on your daughter...awesome accomplishments. With all the bad stuff you hear about kids now a days it's great to have kids that still want to excell!

Yesterday kinda turned in to a "Be a bum" day. After church I took DH's mom to drop stuff off at good will store. DH got the floor of the chicken house done. All clean and bright...that lasted about 30 minutes..LOL. The mosquitos made it really unpleasnt to sit out so we stayed in and watched movies the rest of the day.

Today is go to town day. Scrapping the bottom of the feed bins. The pantry is looking a bit thin so need to buy grub for us and the animals.

Going to get some yogurt for my little maran. Tetracycline is very broad spectrum antibiotic. Don't know about chickens but it kills good "bugs" in humans and has bad side effects when the good gut bugs die. So in the interest of her digestion going to replace the good bugs. She is improving though.

Have a good day...Magpie
well good for you

She's a Golden Cuckoo Maran :) They're auto-sexing, which is a big plus too
This is about what she'll look like as a lady

She'll have feathered legs though

*pic is NOT mine, it's from google, and I think another BYC member.
Strictly for reference :)

so even though today is going to suck (we finally got the OK from my dad to put my dog Pete down) we have air cell dips in my anacona duck eggs :)

and my front Yard garden is coming back nicely after the two false springs we had i was worried my fig tree and dwarf cherry bushes we dead and gone but look what i saw today
i need to take a bunch of clippings and finish wrapping the house like my ma wanted then instead of of a few batches of a few hundred each year we would be getting a few batches of a few thousand wouldn't that be awesome,

a few of my dwarf cherry bushes have Cherry's though they aren't big or sweet they make good pie filling.

Yay for Round Rock!

My family & I stumbled upon a pre-made coop & flock about 6 weeks ago. We bought the coop, 5 pullets & 5 ducks from our neighbor when a job prospect forced him to move suddenly. Within 2 weeks we sold the 5 ducks to @Starfire669 (she still has 3 ducks & the other 2 live with her sister now). We just realized we were more chicken people than duck people. When we got our pullets, though we didn't know for sure, we guessed them to be approximately 10 weeks old. A good age, I think, to start...if you don't mind waiting for eggs (because they are still young & will grow and change weekly...without the extra all the attention chicks require). Or get pullets closer to laying age if you want instant gratification. The run we have is approximately 400sq/ft, with much more space for complete free-range time...so we may get (at most) 5 more pullets. I don't believe we could comfortably accommodate more than 10 birds (both space & effort-wise). I have bought, so far, all of my supplies at Tractor Supply Co. in Cedar Park...(pine shavings, chicken feed, worms, oyster shells, DE, etc...) I say build for the most birds you plan on having...if you end up with less, they will only appreciate the extra space. Good luck!
