Texas

Oh man the drive... It takes longer to get to El Paso from here in Austin than it takes to get to CA from El Paso. My inlaws just drove it, again. I fly unless I have to drive. It's soooooo boring!
I like to take all the back roads and go through all the small towns. I am not a fan of big cities.

Ny chance does anyone have any Dominique laying hens or pullets around Huntsville/Conroe????

Not that I know of. If you happen to find any let me know! Plenty of Barred Rocks but no Dominique. I had some years back, but not anymore.

Managed to get the finishing touches on some of the stuff around the house thanks to all of this wonderful weather. Including, the final touches on my hoop coop. Stole some ideas from Baymule's design, and some from the internet. Here's the finished product!

It's currently where my non selective layers are, as of next month it's where the Aussies will be living.

That looks really good!

Henless your a chicken keeper after my own heart. I can't tell you how many things I've build over the years that don't look half that good!! I know I've put critters in cages I've built and they had to have lived in fear of collapse!! I built a 10' x4'x4' cage for my quail today and must say I've learned a lot about chicken wire in the last 5 yrs or so. I'm supposed to go pick up 15-20 bob whites in the morning!! Probably won't sleep tonight.

@henless Thanks!! I've been building for a few years now and just now am going out of my comfort zone i.e. things that require being cut, not just hoping I have enough material of the same length. My fear of the saw gone, I've built quite a bit in the last few weeks. Even planning on building some tractors and selling them to some people in the area. Have to look at some designs and build some for my own chickens, first, to see how terrible I'll be at it the first few times. LOL

@batchhatchin I totally feel your pain about being scared to build something. When I built this, it took me two days. I fought with myself over designs and finally decided to just try this first. Five quail pens later, I'm excited to say I've gotten good at it. I highly recommend doing frame style pens. Build walls, frame them together, then put the legs on. MUCH easier than this pen. My nephew ( who is about to be nine ) was the best little helper. The smaller pen is 2x3 on both sides. First one I built, but it was just repurposed. I did it piece by piece replacing everything that was rotten, it was free. The second one is the one Sky and I built from scratch. Had to throw in a picture of him on the roof of it, just because I'm proud of him.

@wday There's a flexible PVC that's supposed to be really strong. I can't remember what it's called, exactly, but I'm planning on making my pheasant pens out of it. Much easier to hoop those up at the right heights. Cheaper, too.

I've found that the more I build / demolish the better I'm getting. My dad is a carpenter and he's a HUGE help, but I don't think I got the family trait for being amazing with wood working.
