Absolutely. I got lucky in that this guy slithered right past a bunch of chicks to go curl up in the nest box. I think I disturbed him while mowing and he was looking for a cool place to rest. I took him a couple miles away to a huge cow farm. I don't care much about my eggs, but I wanted to keep my chicks safe.

Good for you @SunHwaKwon , too many people kill nonpoisonous snakes indiscriminately. We need them to keep rats away.

I did kill a coral snake and I felt pretty bad about it. I figured it was for the best, though. I really like snakes, so that helps my decision to not kill them lol.

Hey all - we have our basic coop now!

For all y'all types that are super talented at building and just throw together your coops from all the extra materials in your barn - this is not for you.

But if you're in the DFW area, and you're more a city folk like me, or a half-crip like me, and want to have a coop built for you - I can say very good things about Little Chicken Coop on the Prairie.

It wasn't cheap. But it's very nice, and I think I am avoiding all the first-time-coop regrets!

I did kill a coral snake and I felt pretty bad about it. I figured it was for the best, though. I really like snakes, so that helps my decision to not kill them lol.

I was always amazed at how non aggressive Coral snakes were I've probably walked my dogs over 3 of them now when we used to go walking along the Arroyo Colarado Walking/bike path at night, needless to say we stopped walking them at night.

Oh and a coop update:

All walls are now up. I just need to build a door and evict the silkies from the bathroom. It will not rain this week for us so I can do the roof later. I'll just shade cloth in the roof line for now.

Hi all! So much fun to see how many Texans are here and where they're from. I'm checking in from NE Texas, about 2.5 hours northeast of Dallas near the Red River. I lurk around the forums a lot but rarely post...Always want to post pictures that refuse to load!

Let's see...I'm up to 2 Cubalaya roosters, 15 hens of various breeds, 3 chicks (an accidental single hatch from my brother in law needed a home and friends), one mallard hen, one cayuga/runner/mystery mix drake, and 7 welsh harlequin ducklings. Though 4 of those ducklings are supposedly males and at least 3 will need new homes down the line so if someone wants one, let me know

I'm in dire need of consistent nice weather to build a new coop but my girls forgive me since they free range.

Oh! Also home to 3 dogs, 4 cats, and an elderly father who protests my poultry...then falls in love with them every time

Don't I know it! Born and raised here so I shouldn't be surprised by anything...but it would be nice if it would at least rain during the week and shine during the weekend once in a while instead of the reverse all the time

(I love long tailed breeds) Refering to your Cubalaya (roosters), are they ill tempered with lasers at least? Forgive me for a tacky Austin Powers quote. I have tried out 5 black Sumatra roo's and they all failed the keeper test for their personality. Soup was on for someone and the last one was sent over the fence and back to nature after trying to take my eyes.

Also, In a bit about an all about me post:

I been outside all day so I can serve up eviction notices working on the coop for my stranded in the bathtub (17) Silkie Chicks who are feeling quite crowded in their current digs(moving tomorrow into the 8x10 coop I have been sweating out into creation for the last week).
Photo incoming with a back of my wife photo-bomb! She smells and looks better right now compared to me! :

Tomorrow, I'll lay out the roof line. Then clean it for painting. Interior is all painted enough at the moment. Also have 6 inch roosting post holes to dig in the interior as these are for bantam beardless silkies.

My roos are lovely to the hens and each other...if I interact with them daily they tolerate me, but if I'm gone for a weekend and come back I'm the enemy when I bring food a bit sad because they used to jump in my lap in the lounge chair as juveniles but eh, gives me an excuse to hang out with my birds every day

Seeing all your hard work makes me feel like I really need to get in gear on my own new coop
