Hi there, PrincessChicky! Chickens tolerate the cold very well, much better than extreme heat. Just make sure they are protected from the north wind and any rain. Remember, they're wearing down coats of their own. They still need adequate ventilation. Hope this helps.

I'm in Murphy, near Garland/Richarson/Parker/Wylie/Sachse, Murphy is so small, people usually only know where it is based on what it is near!

Anyway, I'm wondering what you are doing to prepare your coop for the winter?  Though it doesn't feel very winter-like today (highs in the 80's today) I'm sure it will come eventually.  What can I do to make the chickens more comfortable?  Knit them sweaters?  Make them wear diapers and live in the house?  Or just improve the coop to prevent drafts and make it more weather tight?

thought u were allowed hens but not roosters. I sold a cpl chic to a lady that lived in Allen/Lucas

Currently, the city ordiance does allow chickens, but they must be kept 150 feet away from any property line....That doesn't apply to me and I believe as with many other Allen citizens who live on a cookie cutter, small lot size within a subsdivision...I'm desperately trying to find people in the city to change this, to allow us keeping at least a small flock of hens in our backyard....I'm unable to find more than 2 citizens who can join....

Anyone has any other suggestion for me to recruit more local people? Please help!

maybe hit some farmers markets, or people who do outside work , it's not really easy to get soap opera and espn junkies to care about anything but there cable subscription , I would even try lowes and just talk to people , once you get the idea out there you will find like minded people .... good luck and keep up the fight.

Thanks for the advice. My chickens must be wimps. It is 50 out there now and they're huddled on my back porch. They're hiding from the wind, which they could just as well do in their coop, but maybe it is more fun to stare in my windows while they're standing out there.

I live in El Paso and am new to BYC. I have 2 RIRs who have withstood the summer heat quite well and I hope they are just as happy this fall. I don't really know the city ordinances, but I know of a few other el pasoans with hens so I'm hoping to stay under the radar as I suspect we aren't supposed to have them. Luckily my neighbors are great and find the gals entertaining. Plus a gift of eggs is nice too I am not a native Texan but I have lived in San Angelo and San Antonio previously and find El Paso just as wonderful a place, thank you Texans for always making me feel right at home!
