Broody hatching question:

My broody girl is doing well but she is in with the flock. There are 12 girls and 4 oversized nesting boxes. Of course there are favorite laying locations and my broody girl has claimed one. I put some fake eggs in the 2nd favorite box and am having luck with some layers making their deposits there. However, some of the girls insist on laying in with the broody and of course she is adding those eggs. I have been rolling the eggs out at the end of the day and taking the new eggs away (the ones I set her with are marked) then pushing the clutch back under her.

Is this the best way to remove the extra eggs?

I don't have a location to separate her and I want her to be able to remain with the flock.

Just wondering how others handle this. Thanks!

Am I too late to get in on this? I didn't even realize that obviously deeply christian holiday full of rabbits and chick hatching (lmfao) was the same day around our hatch date.

If so, add our 22 eggs. Who knows what will pop out since the only roos gettin' it on with the girls are/were my silkies.

Via reading the threads, I found that many block off a small area near her nest or wall off the nest box to prevent disturbing the broody. My broody is the only bantam & I didn't want the others bullying her off the nest. Likewise, my broody picked the #1 nest as well.

I just got the newsletter including the 6th annual hatch a long I wish I would have known sooner ( since it started on the 14th)

There are contests on the first page of this thread that you can still enter--Many are open to all BYC members.

Do you have eggs incubating?

I currently do not, but the realization that a hatch right at Easter seemed really neat idea, all I would need to go borrow is the incubator...

I just found this today, I started my eggs on the 17th so I understand if its too late to join. Im putting in these mixed eggs, Light brahma/araucana, araucana/araucana, and one araucana/polish mix. This is my first hatch, from my first chickens, and my rooster Mr. Smith, just last year he was torn apart by a bear, hes healed and in just a few weeks he will be a first time daddy!
You are welcome to join us here, but we can't include your eggs in the total set. We had to have a deadline for tracking.

Count me in please! I just hatched some so I won't be hatching any more soon but I would like to enter some of the contests

All of the contests are open to all BYC members, so enter away!

Is it to late to join the hatch along? I have eggs due to hatch on the 4th. 20 of them; 1 SLW, 1 EE, 5 Bantam Cochin, 3 Buff Orpington, 1 Jersey Giant, 5 Australorp, and 4 Orpa Lorpas... er... English Orpington/Australorp mix. LOL!
They were set within the +/- 2 day window of set dates, so yes, your eggs count.

@Happy Chooks - Amazon doesn't currently have the Brinsea Spot Check on Amazon Prime. :(
Bummer. They did when I bought it. (several years ago though)

My broody decided to join the hatch-a-long last weekend without my permission. Because I saw her on/off the nest on Sat, I'm calling her start date on Sunday. (She stayed in the nest Sat night, so on Sunday after dark, I moved the whole nestbox into the garage.) I didn't want to disrupt her brood, but I finally felt around & discovered 7 LF eggs under 1 bantam broody.
Welcome to the hatch!

Though I also think they've had a huge surge in sales on those in the last couple days....for some unknown reason...?

I wonder why.

First off, mark the eggs she's hatching with a sharpie. Then lift her up under the chest with one hand and grab unmarked eggs every day with the other hand. Most broodies will let you do this without any issue. I have 1 broody that fiercely defends her nest and takes chunks out of my hand.

Depends, when did you set your eggs?
