The AMERAUCANA thread

Pics
Due to the loss of the white Phoenix cockerel (name Lucky Ghost) that I gave to a friend's daughter (they have a coop at my place) having passed last night I'm contemplating doing an order from Cackle and adding white Ameraucana and five silkies to the an order of five white Phoenix bantams. Order wouldn't be made till spring of next year. We also lost all but three of the silkies we hatched due to the storm Beryl.

The daughter likes white birds and I don't have any fully white birds but the cockerel I gave her.

He was a very sweet boy. 😭

Thought this was cool.

Chick hatched August 26th/27th, so it's about 4 weeks old. I think it's a boy- creamy feathers are ALREADY being replaced by blue ones across the body. Most notably on the shoulders and hackle, but there's a singular new blue breast feather as well.

I really enjoy how quickly the sexual dimorphic coloring on wheatens and blue wheatens appears.

I like that as well. Its why I want to get away from the solid colors. That way its easier to tell whats what in about 4 or so weeks.

Is he a blue wheaten? I am sad to say that my Isabel Cockerel is a bastard! He is separated from the ladies now and will be culled at the end of the week if no one wants him

It's extremely useful, especially with how long it can take combs/wattles on boys to grow in on certain breeds. I feel if not for their wheaten coloring, my bantam ameraucanas would be much harder to sex as it'd take longer for their combs and other male characteristics to grow in. Seeing the darker colors pop up around the 4 week mark is super useful to sexing them.

Thank you!

Yes, he's a blue wheaten. It's a shame your Isabel is a jerk. My adult blue wheaten male is snippy when I mess with him, but not to the point of attacking me out of nowhere. I'm assuming yours is doing that- and if so, it's an unfortunate but good call to cull him.

No, he has never shown any aggression towards me. Unfortunately he is abusive to some of my hens and pullets. He drug my WTB out of the nest box and repeatedly flogged her, and pinned one of my BCM pullets (13 weeks old) to the ground and pecked her repeatedly until one of my older hens kicked his ass.
