The AMERAUCANA thread

Would you consider selling any of the pullets or will you have chicks/hatching eggs next spring?
I'm not NPIP certified yet, and not sure if it'll happen soon because of how hectic life gets, so I don't think I could even ship eggs out of state. I'm also going to be trying to rebuild my flock for a while because I lost a ton of birds to life stuff so I don't know if I'll have eggs or chicks to even sell in the spring.

The only hatchery that I have used seams to be pretty good. My Ameraucanas come from Cackle and I've been told through evaluation they will be a good start. Cackle actually supported the Ohio national and showed some of their birds there.

Cackle is the one hatchery that I've not dealt with... I meant to go back & list which hatcheries I've had birds from.

I'm thrilled that they supported the OH National Show. One day I'd really like to get there.

Red Roof Hens in NC has a bantam line of BBS Ameraucanas and some other project colors. I have some of her BBS and while they’re not perfect, they’re healthy and great temperament and a great starting point. Some of her line and their sons I mixed with another line I have. :)

Thank you!! I just spent some time on their site & then downloaded their app, so I can go back...

They actually aren't too far from us. I don't remember seeing them in the breeder directories of either Ameraucana group. There's another that used to be closer (Apex/Holly Springs), I had plans on getting some chicks from him, but hadn't gotten back up w/ him after being out of state for 4 months, getting covid & still dealing w/ family stuff...

We are between Southern Pines & Sanford - south & west of Raleigh.

Got best and reserve AOCCL with two of my girls recently.
It wasn't too big of a class, smaller than last year, which figures because lots of people were affected by the 2024 hurricane season. There were still a few others in the AOCCL they were up against. Some araucana bantams and polish. I don't recall how many exactly, I didn't actually spend much time at the show.

Still very proud of them though.

Ahhh congratulations!! I’m jealous you still get to have poultry shows! They canceled all of ours because of HPAI :-(

We did have some success at the two we were able to go to—but I’m super bummed that our season ended before I could really show off my black pullet as she is finally filling out and looking amazing. She was a brat and let the others pull out her beard the week before the show in December 🫣😫

Oh, that's awful! HPAI seems to have really been on the outbreak recently. I know they just cancelled all of the Georgia shows too because of it.

I get how bummed you have to be though, hopefully things will settle down and you'll be able to show her eventually.

Also- beard picking, that's horrible! 🤦‍♀️ I've been there and it's so annoying. Were you able to get them to quit?

Yeah, it’s been mainly impacting the dairy/raw milk users…but they had a couple big poultry outbreaks at Metzer and a backyard flock up north so they decided to cut things off before they could get started I guess. I’m just hoping it helps allow us to still have the County Fair at the end of May! 😣 My poultry project kids are gonna be super bummed if they cancel poultry there too.

Well I solved it by isolating her and she was MAD. 😆😆 I told her it was her fault but she didn’t care—she yelled at us a bunch every day for almost two weeks 😆. She’s now with my handsome boy Angus and I’m hoping for some really nice babies come March/April. :fl I also pumped her full of feather growing vitamins and it helped more than I expected with growing back! She’s been getting Hen House Reserve mixed with Kickin Chicken and Vitamin E and Flaxseed Oil supplements 😆 She will think twice about letting it happen again—yeah right! :lau

Before the show—you can see her skin in several places 🤦🏼‍♀️:

Her now (she laid the egg while I was trying to get her picture so she’s holding her wings really low😆):

Ah, figures then that they closed things off to prevent a bigger outbreak/spread. That pullet looks beautiful! Really nice looking girl.
