The Buzzz in Bee's Hive

I started a new batch incubating today. Eighteen eggs and will add the 'swap eggs' when they arrive, which will make the hatch staggered. I have a hatchery I will turn on at day 15 or 16 and get it ready.
Yes, I know... I am now completely eggdictied.

Oh, I forgot! I wanted to post some updated images of the fuzzybutts from the first two hatches. They are growing out of their fuzzybutts fast. Fleathers and flapping.
I am planning to make their first trip outside, in a play yard I built, to be on Easter, if the weather is nice.

Update: As of last night, after candling the 18 eggs, it is confirmed that all are fertile, with active, growing fuzzies inside.

Update: The "March" Swap eggs, and some of our own, were added to the incubator the last of March. This made, Day 1 being April 1st, which we figure would be easy to remember. I knew that the temp could change, with the addition of new/more eggs, but I also figured I would be here to keep an eye on things. Not the way it happened, so the lesson learned, have a fallback plan... and know that someone else knows what to do... how to take over in an emergency.

An emergency is just what we had happen.

On April 1st, my 13 year old son was hit by a pickup truck while walking home from school. I was backing out of the driveway to go see if I could find him (he was late), when Mama came running out of the house, yelling, the hospital called....

We are home now, as of Saturday evening. He has a fractured collar bone, two fractured ribs, lacerated liver, 10% deflated lung and lots of scraps. He is alive, breathing and walking. He does not remember what happened. He says, he crossed the road, and sat on the apartment steps to rest, because he felt to tired. He never made it across the road.

The person who hit him, was talking on a cell phone, and the witness behind her, said the view was clear, he had the right of way and she should have seen him. The driver will be charged and I will be going to see a lawyer. Medical bills and ongoing medical problems have to be paid.

No one has enough to pay for the stress/trama I've dealt with.

Anyway, while I was away, Mama did the best she could, but the temp went up to 104. I have a headcold, so don't want to handle the eggs more then needed. I set up the hatcher, got the temp/humidty right, and moved the eggs into a carton, and into the hatcher last night. I didn't take time to candle them again. Mama is worried about them, but with my headcold, I don't want to chance harming them with it. By Wednesday/Thursday, we will know, even without candling now.

I am so sorry about your son...I am glad he is out of the hospital and back home.

I don't think your head cold will hurt the eggs...just make sure you wash your hands before handling them.

Good Luck on your hatch!

I am so sorry about your son. That is just horrible. I have been guilty to talking and driving but reading your story made me really stop and think. I hope he heals soon and is home.

On a happier note- You chicks are adorable! I need to get started on making my own incubator so I can stay up all night cooing at chicks in eggs.

Bee,

I hope your son heals quickly. In the big scheme of things, hatching eggs being left unattended not that much of a tragedy huh.

Your previous hatchlings are beautiful!

Update: Of the 18 eggs in this batch we had 9 hatch. The ninth one (third image) had to be helped and is wet/sticky. I bathed it a little bit and it is still in the hatcher to dry out. The other eight were moved to the brooder this evening. They are all dry and fuzzy.
