The Chickendad Chronicles

Late Summer Activities

Baby Barbara, (aka Barbara 2.0) has been moved to the Big Girls Coop, where she is Head Big Girl. Although she has not produced any eggs yet, it is only a matter of time until she and her Rhodie companions begin arguing over nest boxes. Barbara and the other Big Girls received their identification bracelets at the time of the move, Barbara’s was #1, of course. She has been spending her time learning to bathe in the spa, come for treats when called and clean the pen of errant grains and bugs. Probably because the Wyandotte girls have gone broody they have not challenged her position as Queen.

This hatch season has seen several little chicken families toddling about Chickendad Ranch. After the Rock Girls gave up and put themselves back in their coop, their babies joined in with the other kids and made a Rock Group. They are quite mellow and get along well. One of the Mamas got tired of waiting for the favored nest box, so adopted the wastebasket as a place to lay. She did this for three days in a row until she found the nest box available again. The Rhodie and the Cochin Mamas turned their children over to the day care manager as well, and returned to their regular pens to rest up from child care. One of the Cochin Mamas raised a Rhodie Child who was rapidly growing bigger than his Mama. they were an interesting pair, Mama with her little fluffy round self and Junior who was dark red and all feet and beak and bony wings.

As for the Chickendads, they are keeping on. Mrs. Chickendad has visited two surgeons lately who have informed her of the need for more surgery, one to repair the broken screw from the original surgery in her foot 3 years back, and another to repair the rotator cuff/nerve damage in her right shoulder. The question is, which to do first? Chickendad has been busy (overdoing it as usual) splitting wood from the 100 year old tree that the utility company cut down in the backyard, turning the shade garden into a sunny garden.

Those of you who subscribe to the Workaday Chicken Picture will have to be on the lookout for the photo of Captain and his molting frizzle girl coming out soon. Little Fizzie has spent the summer stripped down to her underwear, but yesterday Mrs. Chickendad noticed a few pinfeathers starting to come through. She has forgotten what Little Fizzie looks like with her regular clothes!

Little Boys

The Little Cochin Boys in the breezeway are learning to crow, with varying degrees of success. Of course, they don’t quite have the rhythm pattern down. The Chickendads observed the following conversation yesterday morning:

Little Boy #1: “I’m a pretty boy!”
LIttle Boy #2: “You’re a Do-Do!”

Little Boy #2 has also expressed his disdain for Little Boy #1 by plucking out the middle point on his comb, leaving a large gap.

This is LB #!, minus his comb point, attended to by his two frizzle sisters. Unfortunately, the photo had to be shot thru the netting that is there to keep all these young kids in and not sneaking out to party!

Oh, my! Those two sound like boys I know! No wonder you can tell who is who is your chicken yard, MrsChickendad, they have distinguishing marks (from a dysfunctional childhood). Love the latest!

Baby Barbara's Trip to the Poultry Show

Barbara and her girlfriends were amusing themselves last week looking for bugs and other delicacies when Mrs. Chickendad showed up in the coop. Before Barbara could finish admiring her own toenails, Mrs. Chickendad scooped her up and took her into the big Chickendad Coop. There was a sink full of sudsy warm water waiting there and Barbara was unceremoniously plunked into it.

It was a little scary at first—Barbara had never experienced warm water—but it started to feel good to her and she began to relax. Mrs. Chickendad held Barbara securely while she scooped warm water all over her. My, that did feel good! Even the sprayer felt good; the weather had been chilly lately and it felt good to be thoroughly warm again.

After her bath, Barbara was wrapped in a towel and dried with some sort of noisy machine that scared her a bit at first, but it blew warm air and that felt good, too. Barbara sat on Mrs. Chickendad’s lap and stretched out on her side, enjoying the warm air. She lifted her wing a bit so Mrs. Chickendad could get her wing-pits dry. Barbara got her big bottom dried, then her other side. She squinched her eyes shut and almost drifted off to sleep. Wow, this was great! Barbara was then put in a clean cage with wood shavings and lots of food and water to spend the night and dry completely.

The next day, she went back out in the Big Girl’s Coop and told all her Rhodie girlfriends about what had gone on in the Big Coop. They were all quite impressed, and admired Barbara’s shiny clean feathers with the beautiful even stripes and her clean yellow legs with no dirt.

The following day, Barbara was put back in her crate and taken for a ride in the car. One of the other Big Girls went along, also, as well as some of the Little Bantam Chickens. The boys in the car crowed lustily trying to get the Big Girls to notice how handsome they were after their spa treatments. They also crowed going through the drive-thru at McDonalds’s, announcing that it was breakfast time as well as time to smell the coffee. The Chickendad’s were in immediate need of coffee after bathing all those chickens. Barbara slept most of the way, except for when the Little Boys crowed in their loud soprano voices.

Pretty soon they arrived at a noisy place where she heard lots of boys crowing and some other noises from some funny looking birds with big paddle feet. They went, “wakwakwakwakwakwak”. It was quite annoying. She was put in a cage next to another striped girl who was nearly as beautiful as Barbara, if she didn’t mind saying so herself. She greeted the other girl and they both set about getting their bars all lined up again after their trip. A nap seemed like a good idea, so they dozed off.

After a while, a man in a white coat came down and stopped at Barbara’s cage. She tried to give him her best stink-eye, as he was interrupting her nap. Being such a young girl, though, her stink eye was not particularly fearsome and did not stop him from reaching in her cage and grabbing her. “Help, Murder!” Barbara hollered. The man in the white coat held her firmly and inspected her all over. He pulled her wing out and counted her feathers. He turned her over and (horrors!) inspected her bottom and her tail. He ran his hands down her legs and looked her right in the eye. It didn’t hurt, but Barbara was unhappy about being so rudely awakened. The man in the white coat put her back in the cage and moved on to the girl in the next cage. Barbara shook herself. The nerve of some people!

All the chickens, even including the funny looking ones, stayed overnight at the noisy place. Barbara wasn’t able to get much sleep, but they did turn the lights down at night so those silly boys would shut up. Barbara heard whispers that some of the other birds got ribbons and crowns for their beauty, but she did not believe it. She did not get one, so it must have just been a rumor. Mrs. Chickendad said Barbara would have to concentrate on growing her tail out a bit more before next time.

The next morning, Barbara and her flock mates were loaded back into the car and driven home. Barbara was very happy to meet up with her Rhodie girlfriends again. She had lots to tell them about life outside the Big Girls’ Coop.
