New Emergency

Hi, I made this account just to post about a crisis we're having with our pet chicken. She is a battery hen breed, 1-2 years old and was very healthy until this winter.

She hasn't laid an egg in 2 days and we think it's stuck. She is not her normal self, doesn't have much of an appetite and isn't very active anymore, she is choosing to sit down. Her poop is very runny and she is pooping more than usual. It seems like she is really trying to push the egg out and isn't able too. Her tummy is also making a noise which isn't usual.

We have given her baths with dead sea salts, offer her food like bananas, fruits, yoghurt, chicken feed, oats etc. We are aware that she has not been eating well this winter, she doesn't explore her garden much because of the cold weather and frost. So she is not laying eggs as often as she used to anyway, her diet might be affecting this. We are very worried about her and don't know how to help her. We're keeping her inside where she can stay warm and my little sister can keep an eye on her. She is the only chicken we own, her previous owner neglected her and did not care about her at all. If anyone could offer advice or help in anyway, thank you so much for reading.

Welcome to BYC!

Does she walk like a penguin?

Calcium should be provided to a Egg bound in order for her to contract the muscles.Things like Tums,Egg shells and Calcium pills will work.

How long did you bathe her?

@MasterOfClucker thank you for replying so quickly! She is walking normally but when she stands still she starts leaning backwards. My little sister also told me it seems like she is straining and slowly leans or falls forwards.

We bathed her for about an hour, she was very calm and maybe the egg might have been coming out because we could see a lump. After her bath the lump disappeared and she is pooping a lot and now she is pooping out water. She's tired and very quiet although she is a quiet hen anyway.

I have calcium + vit D supplements I take, would it be OK to crush them and give them to our chicken? How do we get her to lay this egg as soon as possible?

To be sure that she is egg bound i would rub my finger with Vaseline and slowly insert it into her vent if your finger comes to a stop she is egg bound.Whats the dosage on the calcium pills you have?

Ok we'll try that, we're sure she has an egg she's trying to lay. The supplements are 1250mg calcium carbonate which is 500mg calcium and 10mcg vitamin d

Cut the 500mg in half then crush it mix it with some water and dip her beak in the mixture.Dont force it on her give her time to drink.

I found a old thread that said 50mg-300mg will be fine for calcium.

What type of food do you feed?
Does she lay eggs?
Does she seem in distress?

It's really hard to tell with the photo.

Make sure she is drinking well. You can try wetting her normal feed to make a mash to see if she will eat that and mix a little chopped egg or tuna in it as well.
