The end of an era...

Quote:
This sounds all too familiar. A few years ago I lost all my blue orpingtons and a flock of buffs with lineage going back several generations.

We never did find them. I hope you fair better.

Needless to say we have a full security system now.

There was a time, when our community was much smaller, that I didn't worry to much about theft. I knew everyone around me, now it's a different situation altogether. People everywhere. Worrying about theft is getting to be a very real concern. Recently, an eighty six year old man was severely beaten in his home and robbed of sixty dollars. He almost died. Personal and property security is a very real concern, particularily as we get older. I don't think that there is any truly secure system that we can get. Maybe getting all the neighbors to help spread the rumor "that old man is crazy, he shoots at anything that even comes near his property". While nothing can replace your loss, it is heartening to hear that so many BYCers genuinely share your sadness. It reminds us that the good still outnumber the bad.

My deepest sympathy to you and yours. I read your post and I wanted to cry. Not only did they take your chickens, they also took your security, part of what makes you "you". I hope the police find them and throw the book at them.

I got a good chuckle from this. I AM the "crazy old man" around here. At least thats what I let 'em think. And just to confirm it I will occasionally step out back with the .45 or the -.06 or .....whatever strikes my fancy, and make some noise. Those who know me know what I'm up to. But while most of my neighbors have had some kind of theft in the last 4 years I've been blessed. A good German Shepherd helps too!

I am so sorry for your loss. I can't believe that anyone would do that. Do you have any eggs to hatch? I can handle losing animals to animals or accidents, but that's just a whole different loss. Again, I am so sorry.

This is just horrible. I am so sorry this happened to you. I just can't imagine how devastated and violated you must feel.

I have a friend who is always preaching to me that when times get tough, my chickens will be at a high risk of being stolen. I've just poo-pooed that in the past. But no more!

Thanks for the tip the1much - I just ordered 2 of these. One for the chicken run gate, and one for the driveway gate. They are inexpensive compared to many other options and will give me some peace of mind. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93068
I
just don't want to take the chance.

Please tell me you have eggs you can get into the bator ASAP.

I was not happy with our current crop of roos and had removed them from the flock. Several I had already rehomed. They've been out for almost 2 months, so I don't believe any of the eggs are still fertile. My daughter had just this week sent me her hens as well, and for the same reason. When I gave her my flock 2 years ago, she introduced new blood. Her roos were EXTREMELY aggressive, which is why we were culling so hard. We wanted to get the temperament back. We combined the 2 flocks, and were in the process of rebuilding. But her hens had not begun to lay yet since their trip. The thieves hit us when we were the most vulnerable.

Now I have to figure out what--if anything--I want to do next. I do have one coop--10 Buff Rocks--that was not touched, probably because that is the only coop visible from the house. Unfortunately the Buffs are new birds that I have barely begun to work with.

Sadly, the heritage line truly is lost.

So sorry for your loss,I know I hate to loose any birds. The four legged thieves are bad here.I live on a private drive back in the woods.

Thieving is everywhere nowdays. Our local paper has a arrest/report section & it seems to grow weekly with people stealing.

We came how from work last Friday to find the front window on the house had been busted out.The screen was still on the window....It has some dents in the metal. There wasnt any tree limbs or anything around. So not sure as to what happened.

Maybe they didnt make it inside cause my pit bull greeted them at the window
