The end of an era...

Fridge eggs !
That's an idea! I put some eggs that had been in the fridge for a week or more into the bator this past summer and they hatched out just fine. Just an idea......

That must be devastating for you all. My sincere condolences.

Another thought on this is to have BIG dogs protecting a flock like yours. Who would think someone would actually steal all your chickens???? That just ain't right!!!!!

I am so sorry this has happened to you. I would be purely depressed if someone stole my chickens - it is bad enough when critters take them, but when Humans steal them, that is a whole other breed of lowdown dirty dog.

Three of my coops are down in the donkey pasture - close enough to the house that I'd hear the donkeys going off and the guineas perch in a tree above the coop - so I have double protection there. The guineas will go off at the sight of a moth that happens to flutter to close to them, they'd for sure go off on something big enough to cut a lock and take chickens.

The fourth coop is within full sight of the house, so I doubt anyone would try to get in when I was home - and I am usually home. Still, it is worrisome that folks would do something like that, and I know people are getting more desperate for food and money.

Just last week I had someone poaching deer on my land. I am not anti-hunting - I am anti - shooting guns off around my family and animals and my home. My step dad had been down in those woods just earlier in the day - thankfully they didn't shoot him.

Like you said, I don't know what else can be done to protect your property, short of hiring someone to stand guard 24/7 and that is simply not practical.

makes me wonder what the world is coming to - and where it will be in another year or two.

Wow, that's terrible! I keep hearing about this stuff and it makes me want to take an old computer ($200), a $30 webcam, and have the thing take pics every minute around my house (motion lights at night would help with the pics).

Really sorry for your loss. I hope they catch the thieves!

harbor freight has a motion and heat detector for 16.99 ,, they chime on the receiver end ( in ya house) if anything moves,, and the receiver can be 400 feet away from the detector,,, they also have B&W cameras, that have built in night vision, that ya can hook right into ya vcr for 29 bucks.

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your heritage flock. That is irreplaceable for you, I know. Some people. They are not like natural predators that run on instinct, but those thieves choose to do evil and harm on purpose.

The surveillance camera suggestion sounds like a good idea for all of us, I think.

Wow I'm sorry about your teribble lose. I hope someone knows or saw something that happened that night. I live in a small community outside of Lowell, IN. I don't think anyone would come in the backyard and do anything to my birds but now I'm wondering. I don't know what I would do if someone came on my little bit of property and did that to me and my family. I'm truly sorry for such a huge lose for you.
