The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I'm so glad you posted this. I will have a singleton in a couple of days. It will be another week before she has friends. I was thinking about a mirror to perhaps fool her into thinking there was another chick in there. Anyone try that? I will look for a feather duster. My doggie toys are too...well...loved.

Dee.. the real feather dusters work really good.... I hang it up so the chick can get up under it like it would its mom.... Also... I hang it near the warming light.... they love it. :) Just couldn't find my last one anywhere... soo I grabbed these two little toys from the puppy box and the chick perches on top of the elephant to groom itself ... at night it sleeps between the bone and the elephant. The first night was the hardest.,.... it peeped and peeped and peeped... finally I got up to cover the sides so she couldn't see out.... then she settled down.

I will definitely go out and get a feather duster. Worth the try. I hatched out 4 chicks that my neighbor let me have to test my incubator/hatcher and my lack of experience. How old should this one be before I introduce it to the others? The others are 6 days old. My neighbor is letting me keep her chicks until my own hatch next week. So I have to buy some time.

No you cant tell them apart Ill probably just mention the possibility.

Isn't the gold/orange bleeding through on the wings and hackles of some blue orp cockerels from using split blacks unknowingly? I worry about using blacks that are split for that reason. It takes a long time to breed out of that and it doesn't show up until the cockerels are a couple months old (doesn't seem to affect the hens color

). I am not geneticist but I had this issue in Blue Orps that I purchased and ended up culling every single bird from that line. There are others on here who have had that issue but it is seldom talked about.........The same thing is being seen in the UK as a lot of the split cockerels were put back in the breeding pens unknowingly.

I say be very careful using split cockerels on anything except what they are split to and keep good records. Just my opinion from past experience
