The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Well, I didn't know at the time. But, had heard that breeding the GL's back to black would improve the color. The hens were in with my blacks when they decided to start laying. I guess I'll see how it goes. I would like to hear more responses to know if it is possible that this crossing could lead to improving the color and get them back to pure. It will be interesting to watch them grow out. I have since separated my GL's from the blacks. My eggs are infertile now. I will need to do some trimming to get them fertile again. I have one GL rooster and 3 GL hens. This was over a month ago. So, all fertile eggs from my Gold Laced hens will be pure GL.

I think your best bet if u want improve color on GL is to just hatch a bunch and cull any with poor or smutty lacing at maturity while still trying to keep or improve type and continue doing that each generation. Another way would be to introduce blood form other imported lines with clearer lacing. Most the imports of any color will need work and certain breeders will improve them over the years. Also noticed some people r doing blue laced red projects with these GL birds and even when they do get the lacing right. These r not birds I think we would consider BLR as the base will still be more gold or orange looking then deep red. Maybe we will call those blue laced gold Orps. if they r only outcrossing to blue to develop these.

These were sired by black males over gold laced hens. After that, all chicks from the gold laced hens will be from the gold laced rooster. That is, if I get fertility back. Otherwise, I will see how these chicks develop while I wait to find out if they can work back into improving the breeding. Thank you Jhorn for your input. I really appreciate it. I'm gathering that I should have made omelets. I'm not being sarcastic. I'm just trying to learn what to do with all of these new colors and only work on projects that have hope. This didn't start out as a project. I was just told that the cross was a benefit and it happened by chance. I just hatched the eggs. I do keep thorough records of all eggs hatching and what they are. I need to do more homework about this cross. I like omelets. Chicken berries are fine eating.

The original Gold Laced Orpington was Gold Laced Blue. The Gold Laced Black was created from the Gold Laced Blue. Marc of Heirloom Orpington imported both the GL Blue and the GL Black. I think Nellie of FancyChick has both also.

The crossing black back into the GL is not to improve the lacing. It is an attempt in removing or minimizing the shafting in the pullet.

WooHoo!!! I have eggs coming from Renie!!! I'm so excited!!

My turn to share pics. This is Squeaks, my 10 month old rooster. He was my backup rooster who became my main rooster after a Rott tore through my fencing and killed all the birds inside the pen last summer. Fortunately, Squeaks was at a friends house when the attack happened along with my hen Miss Piggy that was also at a friends house. They both have faults. Squeaks has too many points on his comb, but no side sprigs. Miss Piggy is very dark. I'll post a pic of the hen a little later, but how is the type on Squeaks? Worth keeping on as the King of the pen or should I start over

Real nice chest on him Holly, for a 10 month old he looks good to me, Don't worry to much about that comb, they are easy to fix in the brood pen providing you have one with a good quality comb to breed to.

Thanks Roger,
I really like him. I love the splash color, and he is a very sweet boy, friendly and good with the kids. Ill try to dodge snowflakes and get a pic of my hen today. She is a very dark blue. When she hatched as a chick, I couldn't tell if she was black or blue. Will her blue chicks be this dark too or will she throw some lighter blue chicks too?

Breeding to the splash rooster, you should get lighter blue but a lot of splash too most likely. The splash birds are good to have to work with on the lighter blue color breeding with a darker bird as you have, you are headed in the right direction.
