The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

This p ic was made Feb 2. I weighed this boy last Sat and he weighs 10lb 2 oz. He will be 10 months old next week. Sweet boy too. He is very special to me cause he was one of the only chicks i had hatch last year. I was in the hospital when he hatched and didnt get to see him till he was a few weeks old. There were two of them hatched under a hen and didnt know if they would make it or not cause I couldnt be there to separate them from the flock. My DH just had a friend put some chick starter and water in smaller feeders in the hen house. They made it and ran the yard in and out of the pen till I had to lock them up to keep predators from getting them on the outside. It was a pair and i have enjoyed watching this boy grow up

He has really grown since this pic and soon I will get some new good ones.

Jeremy, although I admire your passion, I agree with Christabelle. Its nice for me that there is a wide range of price for these beautiful birds. It gives more opportunity for those of us who are just getting started to have some beautiful birds and also have the option to improve as we go along. For me, there's just no way I could justify spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars on birds.....I have no plans to sell my birds for profit, and I'm doing what I can to improve the quality of my birds as my budget will allow. Not trying to ruffle any feathers.....I'm just sayin'...

they are not supposed to fit the US standard, they are ENGLISH Imports on this thread. not everyone cares to show and showing is no proof of anything, especially not when its your pal judging and your inferior bird wins. seems to happen quite often. I hope that nobody on this thread with imported stock is breeding to the US standard, what a shame if they are!
I am using my English Buffs to add much needed new blood to SOP Buffs in this country. Our countries' standards are very similar except in regards to tail set. The SOP was changed sometime after WW1 to a lower angle . Except for that, the English birds, who fit the English standard, not necessarily what is currently winning over there, are very similar to our good ones. The British have infused Cochin blood into the breed again, but the breed was made using "Shanghi Fowl" to begin with. It just makes sense to re-introduce the English lines into SOP birds instead of using Rock blood.

I also keep a line of pure English Buff Orpingtons for my own pleasure , and because I feel it would be a shame for future US Orpington breeders to loose this new gene pool. Despite your opinions about showing , please remember it has always been the breeders who show, who have preserved those breeds. Without breeders who breed to the SOP, no two chickens of the same breed would look alike.

I think NICE BBS still sell for quite a bit. There is always going to be a split in quality I think... Not everyone is going to want to spend a lot of money on chickens... But those of us who do look for the very best. I also try not to take offense at people trying to make some money... I like money... though, I don't have any dilutions about making money with chooks. I put them in the "vice" category. I don't like cheaters and thieves though. If you want to sell cheep stock so be it... But show pictures of said cheep stock... I feel bad for newbies (like me) who may get suckered into paying quite a bit for subpar birds based on unsavory seller trickery.

Jeremy, your birds are beautiful.

Well put Christabelle. I'm selling a few chicks. In fact, most people on this thread sell chicks. It helps to pay for feed. I also agree with Jeremy that a lot of people are ruining a lot of hard work that went into creating nice birds by crossing to just anything and calling them pure English or even show quality. That is very sad. It is a "buyer beware" market place. I do hate seeing people misrepresenting what they are selling. I think it is these dishonest sellers that people refer to as "Fast Buck" sellers. The really sad thing is that people will believe what the seller told them and sell them as such also and so on.

I am so thrilled with them Renie. Thank you for so many black chicks and the extras. I just love them. They are now in the spare bedroom

They are going to be some super nice birds for you Kiniska..congrats..and enjoy every minute..You will be joining the lawn chair club..Once they get out in the yard..you will be spending a lot of time admiring them from the comfort of the lawn chair.

My chickies are here from Renie! Will post some pictures tonight. SOOOOOOO happy!
Congrats!!!

They are so cute. Hoping around like pop corn. I loves them! Thank you Renie!
Look at all of those beautiful babys!!
Quote: Very good points..

Not everyone shows..but it is a great place to learn. You can see hundreds of birds in person, up close and personal. To view a bird is so much different than a picture.

Quote: Jullie..that is one big beauty!

Julie, he looks like a big Papa Bear.

I'll try and get a good picture of my little black jewels later today. For a change I will not bore you with pictures that are GL.

Jeremy...dreamy. You have amazing birds. It's been a while since you've posted pictures. Glad I popped in and saw them.
