The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I don't agree that whether or not you have shown your birds, or if your birds adhere to the US Standard of Perfection should dictate the prices you set for your birds. Why does that matter at all? What does a blue ribbon prove, that one person (a biased judge) deems your birds "worthy".

I've never shown a day in my life and I honestly have no intentions to. I don't need acknowledgement from someone else that I know what I'm doing with my flock when I separate them into breeding pens.

I don't think my birds conform to the US SOP at all but that doesn't mean that I'm going to sell them for $5 a chick.

I feel you have to set a price that you think is a fair representation of how much care, effort, knowledge and selectivity goes into your breeding practices. It's very easy to import beautiful Orpingtons from the UK (relatively speaking) and it's even easier to wash the whole flock down the drain due to irresponsible breeding.

It saddens me to see how low imported BBS Orpingtons are selling for nowadays, I feel that all that allows for is people to get there hands on something special and then ruin it. The auctions where people are pandering sub par birds as "100% English" because they came from this or that imported line disgusts me. The same thing will happen eventually with all of the other colors. I know there are people who are already marketing Jubilee X Speckled Sussex birds as well as folks who are calling anything outcrossed to a Black a "split" in order to try and make money off of the genetics a bird is carrying. But if you don't know how to properly breed then all you're doing is creating a big genetic mess. It makes me not want to put any of my birds on the market simply so that they won't be exploited by reckless propagators.

Anyways... my two cents.

Those girls are so pretty. I am hoping some of my little girls I have hatched right now that look so round look just like your girl above

Hi I need everyone's opinion please as this will be my first year selling chicks from these. What would be a fair price for a started pair of BBS English Orps around 8 to 12 weeks of age? These r not culls altho I do have a couple that r blue and very typey but lacing is not really good but those will be sold with a black of the opposite sex. I am only keeping back some really dark laced blue pullets, most the black pullets and a handful of black cockerals to grow out.

I plan to sell these locally and not fool with shipping this early in the season so don't be afraid to post different amounts then others cause market varies by location. I would really appreciate everyone's opinion please and thank u in advance.:idunno

BTW forgot to include b4 people ask these r pure English from imported lines. Again any help would b greatly appreciated.

The pricing of birds is dependent on a few things. How much you know. Have you shown, and bred enough birds to be able to effectively judge the quality of the birds you are selling? Has this line produced winners? Are the youngsters free from defects that would be  a detriment in the breeding pen, or the US show ring? We are currently seeing people who have NEVER shown, asking huge prices for experimental birds resulting from English breedings, lovely , but those birds do not fit the US Standards. Better safe than sorry, if you are just getting started. The ultimate satisfaction is a satisfied customer, whose  birds produce well in the next generation, and whose offspring show well.:old

they are not supposed to fit the US standard, they are ENGLISH Imports on this thread. not everyone cares to show and showing is no proof of anything, especially not when its your pal judging and your inferior bird wins. seems to happen quite often. I hope that nobody on this thread with imported stock is breeding to the US standard, what a shame if they are!

I think NICE BBS still sell for quite a bit. There is always going to be a split in quality I think... Not everyone is going to want to spend a lot of money on chickens... But those of us who do look for the very best. I also try not to take offense at people trying to make some money... I like money... though, I don't have any dilutions about making money with chooks. I put them in the "vice" category. I don't like cheaters and thieves though. If you want to sell cheep stock so be it... But show pictures of said cheep stock... I feel bad for newbies (like me) who may get suckered into paying quite a bit for subpar birds based on unsavory seller trickery.

Jeremy, your birds are beautiful.
